View Full Version : When you're out of LN2, whaddya do? [5 GHz benchable on DI]

Long story short...Vapor and myself were having somewhat of a bench session, which pretty much turned out to be hell. We were benching with a couple of k|ngp|n's containers, one of them being a Dragon Evo 2.3. We ran out of LN2 very quickly thanks to a vacuum leak and there were no suppliers open during the weekend.
So, the only option left was dry ice. We'd used the Evo before on LN2 with great success, but I didn't know what to expect when backing down to dry ice.
Well, I'll let the results speak for themselves. Let's just say the way it was scaling, I almost forgot that I wasn't on LN2. :p:
config:
Dragon Evo 2.3 w/dry ice
Core 2 Extreme X6800 1.82v
Team Xtreem PC2-5300 3-3-3 spec 2.7v
Asus P5W64 WS Professional
We began by smashing the DI into a fine powder:

I came in with both cores enabled and started maxing out pi. Ended up here.

Sorry about the blurriness...main thing to look at is the temp.

Unfortunately I was unable to catch those last 8MHz no matter how much I fine tuned the vcore. So, I disabled a core. (Sorry Vince, you know you'd have done the same)
And in comes the magic number and then some.

I ran out of dry ice too before I could run 3D, but Vapor can attest to it being capable of running 3DMark05 with both cores loaded at 4.8GHz+, no screenies of that, got too caught up in 1M. Even in 1M, the gap between single and dual core stability is minuscule at best...just needed that extra hair of course. :D
So there you have it. The right chip with the right container can nearly fool you into thinking your DI is actually LN2. :p: The Evo clearly does great with both.
Edit: Here's a pic of the setup this morning with the Evo pimpin-

Great results guys!! What happened to the QX6700???

lol dude, don't even ask. Trust me I REALLY wanna see what that sucker can do. We'll get to it in due time. Not enough LN2, not enough DI and not enough time this weekend. You know how any CPU that passes thru Eric's hands is like though...his golden touch has never seemed to fail. :p:

Yeah, I can attest to 4.8+ in 05...too bad it was a stock speed X550 :(
I gotta say...5GHz on DI is something I wasn't expecting this weekend, even after we got the DI (honestly, I expected 5.5+GHz on LN2, but damn that dewar!).
Hopefully the 2900XTs will fall in order one of these days (we were having problems with them...Gautam later found out that one isn't even working well [i.e., booting] on air, let alone the chiller :()....then hopefully we can also take my QX6700 for a spin under some cold stuff :D

What a chip, 5ghz is certainly impressive. Wish my E6600 could do that, hopefully my new 3070 will. Too bad about the dewar though, good luck next time.

Awesome results for dry ice. Is the dewar your own or a rented one?
Vapor

It's Gautam's own.

See if the palce he bought it from will repair it. I know it's possible over here so I assume you can get it done where you are too.

He might kill me for saying this, but:
eBay :p: :(

Hah ya. I don't normally get burned but I was an idiot this time, it was my fault; I strongly believe in caveat emptor. That's interesting about it being possible to be repaired...I'll ask my ln2 supplier if they might have any leads. I can live with it in the short term as I like benching as soon as I get it anyways.
Ask for some time off asap btw, and thanks a lot again for letting me having the Evo. ;)

when is round 2 scheduled for? I still want to know that that eric's QX6700 can do under LN2

Nice run bro on dice.... It would have been cruel if you didnt get that last bit to reach 5ghz... My E6600 topped at 4940mhz, 60mhz seem so small but its like miles away at that speed :(
My pot is done by friday so Ill try out ln2 for the first time, only thing is the dewar I can borrow is only 10l, how many hrs do you think Ill get?
Gautam

Vapor and I used about 8 for a couple of sessions...that got us 6 hours for solid pi benching. 3D would be way different.

Thanks... I was afraid 10l will only get me a couple of hrs whew.... no 3d for me, I dont think my 9250 pci vidcard will do too well hehe.... now back to original topic......
Curious why you used a different hardware and not your Commando/ballistix.. That board I hear is superfast for pi but your commando with divider is no slouch either :D
Gautam

The Commando and Ballistix definitely own Pi. ;) This configuration has a different purpose...:D Still rockin' the Evo and dry ice.

I'm sure Vapor will sleep easier now. :)

You should have blocked out a couple of numbers to add to the mystery ;)
Bring on the 35K already, sheesh whats taking soo long :D

Damn nice DI ownage fellas
Those are some of the highest DI clocks I've seen. Impressive work. The 1m with both cores is really high, 100mhz+ more than I did with evo.
Looks like your getting that mobo dialed in too.
Now for a new 05' score with another 500mhz+ on the cpu
Good luck on that chip...

I think the mount was actually really bad on this run. I was scaling very well starting from 4750ish if you recall...but I did end up nailing a run at 4800 which scored 200 pts lower than this one. Really was teetering on the edge of stability which is why I suppose it didn't score well.
This board sure behaves like a cheap whore until you really get it figured out, lol. It is definitely a winner though; you've already proven that bit. ;)
Not to sound cheesy but it's really good to have friends to lean on thru benching like this. You've helped so much you might as well claim this as your. ( I guess that might get you in some trouble though :p:) :bows:
Same to Vapor, additionally those chocolate-coated cherries are like crack. :D ;)
bloody hell, how have i missed this thread???
very nicely done Gautam/Vapor, 5GHz 1M on dry ice is just ridiculas...a testament to the Evo 2.3.
you know i wanted to see some 32M action though :D any idea where you think you can run 32M with just dry ice and the Evo? 4.9GHz+?
Gautam

Hehe. This setup is meant for 3D. I'll go back to Pi seriously once I pick up a P35 board. (At this rate I might wait for DDR3...) I don't think 4.9GHz should be a problem at all. 3DMark05 is waay more demanding than 32M...even on air I find at least a 70-80MHz gap between the two. The Evo really is a great container for DI as well. The highest swing I see is around 3-4C, and that's during the toughest parts of '05.
