Hey XS.

I'll be building a new rig (as many others) after the Intel price cuts, so probably early August and I am having a difficult time swallowing 3xx for a 8800GTS 640mb when the "supposed" G92 line from nVIDIA is supposed to debut around Nov, 3 months later.

Three months isn't that long to wait considering there aren't more than one "MUST-HAVES" games debuting around that period (Assuming Crysis still is launching near Sept) and I would believe their new line would fall near the 400ish range which I don't mind spending considering its the supposed new line that's supposed to out perform the 8xxx series anyway.

Short descrip of new rig: intel q6600/bx2/2gb firestix/320gb/Westy 37w3 in 1920x1080 res.

So i have 2 options for that rig:

1. Get a 7800GT to tide over till G92 releases and pick one up then and then SLI it in my current rig (in sig). Delta loss would be roughly 80~100 (used of course)

2. Just get a 8800GTS 640MB as planned.

Do you play anything that is badly maxed out on your 7800? Is the 7800 keeping you from things you badly want to do? If not then waiting makes some sense at this point. If you'd asked this question 6 months ago, it would be a different story. But now you are approaching the fence time, when waiting that bit longer gets a large jump in performance. The rumours are always "double the power of the current high end" but that usually turns out to be a 50-70% increase. That's still a lot. And since you drive a high res monitor, that increase could be something you'll put to good use.

Now on a personal note? I just recently took the jump and got the 8800. But I don't mind updating every 9mo or so, thus I'm well aware I'll probably end up with a G92, but not likely till early '08. Selling the cards sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, so I wouldn't count on that as a solution.

personlly: if your 7800gt is doing find on the games you play i would wait for the g92 series, but if you 7800gt is unable to keep up with the games you play go for the 8800 now

Or you could do what I do, wait until the 9-series is released from Nvidia and then the 8-series will drop significantly and will become much more affordable. The 8800GTX will likely drop in the $3xx price range then and that sounds a bit more appetizing to me.

...yes waiting is always cheaper :hehe:
if you want some satisfaction now you can go buy some juicy fruit.

there is also the 320mb version 8800gts
..but why the 7800 gt - have you found a deal on it?
had a quick look in aussie - looks like a 7800gtx is about the same price...and the 8800 gts 320MB version is about 50-70 bucks cheaper....i assume you want to play HD movies (1920x1080)?
th 7900gs is about half the price here to a 7800gt and almost the same performance.

I think he's considering a used card which would obviously be the cheapest route.

which one? and who is selling it?

1 - As of right now, I don't notice any hiccups or laggy gameplay that is affecting my gameplay with the 37" Westy @ 1920x1080 res. I know that will definitely
change once I get some next-gen games such as Crysis, Warhammer, Huxley, etc. But I also know that those games aren't due in the next 1-2 months, hence the whole
using the 7800GT temporarily and then upgrade to the G92 line around Nov.

2 - The only reason why I state the 7800GT card as an option (as opposed to 7800gtx etc,) is that my current rig in my sig is going to the girlfriend, and
I could practically sell it to her (or just give it) for a cheap price and SLI it in my current rig while I place the G92 card in my new August build.
Or I also do have a friend who has a single 7900GT KO card that could be interested as well in getting it cheap, while SLI'ing it down the road.

3 - As far as who could be selling me the potential card, I could either craigslist it or try to get one off [H] Trade forums or other various locations. They seem to be
going fo about ~100-120 in the used market now.
