View Full Version : psu for tecs?

adding a tec or maybe 2 to my system, initially a 227 pelt, 25A, 12v
don't see the point on spending 100GBP on a meanwell so was concidering a Silverstone SST-OP750, 12v output of 60amps on a single rail.

everyone seems to be raging about dual or quad rail psus but that obviously wouldn't work (unless you can wire the pelt to run from 2 rails?)

so would this be at all decent?

It isn't a single rail on the 12V I believe, because of the wording below:

combined +12V: 720W/ 60A

EDIT: I stand corrected and would accordingly rescind my prior statement.

Class-leading continuous 60A single +12V combined output at 5 0 ℃

In that case, I believe this might work for your purposes. However, understand that each individual molex isn't meant to draw a substantial amount of current; concordantly, you might consider using parallel connections -- that is, using various +12V cables and various GNDs to evenly distribute the load you will be drawing.

sort of reverse engineer a molex combiner? rather liek the molex spliters that come with so many psus but other way around

I would like to help you out but I can't get my eyes off your avatar!! Can you send me that pic? :p:

What L33T is trying to tell you with a lot of words is that it is never a good idea to use a standard psu for a tec. They are to much work and to much of a risk.

lol don't have the full size pic, sorry. really don't wanna spend £100 ($200) for something like a meanwell, which i've heard are also rather loud

My meanwell is not that loud.. My fans on my rad are way louder then the meanwell. The meanwell fan runs when it gets hot and then shuts back off so little noise.

hmm maybe if i can find somewhere uk based that does it for a reasonable price i'd get one, to buy from DD for eg would be $118(£60 nice!) then another $55 for shipping (£90 all together, not so nice)

+ UK tax on that if buying from us

well it's gonna be a skt939 dual core, 1950xt, couple of raptors in raid 0 plus a bigger storage drive. dd maze4-1 tec block with 226 peltier on a loop with a ddc and a triple rad, gfx/hdds/nb/mosfets cooled on a second loop

ebay is your friend :D

I will post some links but I have never bought from the below suppliers myself (so read feadback etc)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/400W-13-8V-29A-Switching-Power-Supply-RADIO_W0QQitemZ160127486730QQihZ006QQcategoryZ4870 8QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I have something similar to this but its 40amp not 30 (being able to ajust the voltage is a big bonus)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Palstar-SPS8250-amateur-radio-cb-radio-power-supply-New_W0QQitemZ180057053693QQihZ008QQcategoryZ48708Q QrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

I am planning on making some TEC coldplates when I get back to the UK. Probably using swiftech waterblocks, but I dont have any specs or timeframe yet. When I get back home I wont have much money to spend on any projects for a bit :(

The maze 4-1 is rubbish IMO, swiftech is much better, winchlabs much much better.

Unfortunately winchlabs went out of buisiness (or at leat stopped selling anything) sombody on another thread posted that they might still be selling stuff.. might be worth trying to find out.

This is the best TEC block you can easily buy at the moment IMO

Holst, where in the uk is aq good place to buy peltier modules? if i'm getting a 400w supply for this might as well get a minimum 320 watt peltier, but having real trouble finding them, 50mmx50mm. 320-360watt kinda thing

The place I got my pelts has long ago closed unfortunately.

Second hand forums and ebay would be the first places I would be looking.

Remember that 320watt pelts are sometimes 24V not 15, and you will need a different PSU.

Elfy, dunno if you're still interested in this but there are PSU's on Ebay that can power a 320W TEC cheaper then a meanwell.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/400W-13-8V-29A-Switching-Power-Supply-RADIO_W0QQitemZ160137062383QQihZ006QQcategoryZ4870 8QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

For example.

It has an adjustable output voltage so you could hit 14v (max for 320W's I think)

Btw, there are so many people from Leics here ;P I'm from near Loughborough (guess you guys ahve heard of it), I spotted another guy from Loughborough on XS the other day and then there's Holst and you Elfy :P We could make our own OC team lol
