I'm going to be getting a new S939 dual-core opteron soon. And I was wondering, which would be the best, (and cheapest) clocker to be purchased from newegg or zipzoomfly?
I will have H20 cooling (Storm rev.1). On a DFI Expert motherboard.

im thinking the 165? i just bought one from the egg supposed to be here tommrow i guess i will let you know how it goes i planed on puting it on water if it clocks well on air
imho 170 is much better specially if u r aiming for 3Ghz and u own a 2gb kit of ram that won't do more than DDR500 easily
also check this thread for steppings
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=96900
and imho buying a used 165 is not a bad idea if u find nice steppings

Both 165 and 170 are great chips.. if u have better ram, push the FSB with 165..

but will it hurt performance at all running a divider? and is there even any ddr ram that will do 300htt+??
no using dividers on A64 won't hit the performance at all
this was tested and stated in the glory days of AMD64 939
and it is very hard to find a 2gb kit that will do 300+ , and money wise spending a little more on the cpu is much better and the results will be better than depending on luck in finding a 2gb kit that will do 300mhz for 24/7 usage

Yeah, I was thinking that my ram would influence my CPU choice. So, shoot for 170, or *IF* possible, 175 (assuming price drops follow suit for this chip)?
i don't think 939 will see any other price drop
look for a used one and u won't regret if u can find an amazing steppings for much cheaper than the neweg's price

Someone here has a 165 in the classifieds that can do 3ghz, but he wants $175...:(
If he drops it below $130 i'll consider it.
ya 175$ is too much
also what voltage does it needs for that 3Ghz ? i hope it is not much
check the Dual-core opteron thread , there is a member there that got recently a 180 that can do 3.4Ghz very easily on single stage

Yeah the 180 and 185 are both hands down the best chips. Should do 3GHz+ easily with low volts on good air, at least the newer chips.
165 and 170 are still good, but chances are you'll get 2.7-2.9 instead of 2.9-3.1
