View Full Version : $300 TEC solution for E6600?

I'm considering a TEC cooling solution for my current system (see sig). I've seen products like the Vigor Gaming CLT-M2I and CoolIt Freezone but I wonder how much better these solutions are than water or an excellent air cooler. I do like the fact that they're self-contained products in that everything is included for installation.

I can afford around $300 (325 max).

Any recommendations?

If you're deadset on TEC cooling, I would avoid products like those and instead build a normal water cooling loop, with the only exception being that you use a TEC block on the CPU. The only thing that makes me hesitant to recommend TEC cooling is the fact that newer processors, such as the C2Duos are putting out a lot more heat than their predecessors and it's becoming harder and harder for TEC cooling to keep up. The problem is that if the TEC can't handle the heat load, temperatures increase very quickly and very drastically. If you get something like the MCW6500-T-775 TEC block and slap a 320W Pelt on it you should have no problem handling the heat load of an overvolted, overclocked E6600. A proper TEC setup such as that would provide temps much below straight water cooling. How much further would this allow you to OC? 50Mhz, 100Mhz? Is the added danger of TEC's (they can die, there could be condensation, etc.) and the added cost of TEC's worth this increase in OC? That's a question for you to answer.

EDIT: But to answer your question, TEC cooling in a high-end water cooling loop can provide sub-zero idle temps and load temps in the low teens. For this reason, many people find it to be a good compromise between straight water cooling and phase change.

I agree with what hijon89 said but I would sugest going with a ss or chiller for 300

Plz do point where I can find either for 300? For $300 I'd definately get one.

Second hand or have somebody build you one (classifieds)

$300 might be a bit low (I think so)

But it will be better to save up for a few months and get phase change than a TEC heatsink that will only give better temps at idle.

(You need 100 posts to view classifieds and have to vetted by a moderator, dont spam your way to 100 posts or you will be denied entry)

your not going to get one for $300 but you can save for a month or 2 and get 400 then talk to jinu. IMHO if you drop the 300 on a tec you will not be happy and then you will be blaming everyone here for missleading you. But if you like I will make you a list of what you will want to get for a tec setup. :D

I'm looking for something relatively easy to install, a kit per se. Think I may just go with a wc setup for now and add a peltier block later. This will allow me to split the cost and go with something that will perform better in the long run.

Now this brings me to start a new thread in the liquid cooling subject area...

Straight water is pretty simple:
DDC2 w/ Petra Top - $100
DTek FuZion CPU Block - $65
Swiftech MCW60 GPU Block - $45
Swiftech MCR220 Radiator - $45
7/16" Tubing - $20

These parts are pretty standard and I think almost everyone would agree on them. The only possible areas for disagreement would be that some people prefer the Alphacool top for the DDC2, some people prefer the bowed Apogee GTX over the FuZion (but I wouldn't recommend bowing a block for a first-time WC'er), and the Thermochill PA120.2 will perform better than the MCR220 but costs almost 3x as much.

Tec is just as hard to install as a phase change unit. I agree you should get your water setup before thinking about tec. If you want something that is all done for you then swiftech has a nice tec waterblock that is made and insulated for you. just a small amount of work.

as for a disagreement for hijon I don't like the ddc pumps I say get the d5 pump.

I assume that's because of the recent DDC deaths? Because the DDC2 is much smaller and quieter than the D5. And according to Maxxx it also performs better.

TEC is much more difficult to install and run than phase change.

Phase change you just insulate and turn it on, and it works (if its built right)

TEC needs tuning and all components have to be correct or you have problems, much more complex.

I think going straight watercooling is a good compromise for you Nlight95, good luck.

I had two of the ddc pumps and used them for 2 min and sent them back. They were junk and didn't have enough flow.
Another reason I recomend the D5 is because it is used in lots of things not just for us water cooling people.
I have the same pump in my washer with a different top. So that tells me it is a darn good pump and worth the 10 or 20 $ more.

Unfortunately, all empirical data seems to contradict your impression of the DDC.

A DDC2 w/ Petra Top will outperform a D5 by a decent margin.

I have seen that. but I still say they are junk. I have had a D5 for 5 years. how long have you seen a DDC hold 24/7 running cpu at 100%

If you want reliability get an Iwaki. If you don't want to be eating ramen noodles for the next month, get a DDC2.

LOL Iwaki yet another industrial pump. :)

Are the premade swiftech TEC blocks sufficient to cool overclocked, overvolted core2duos?

:D yep as serialk11r pointed out. You can do it just fine. something for you to think about though.

that core 2 duo puts out less heat than a 4400x2 amd
