View Full Version : Radiator Question

I am rebuilding my system and instead of using a water chiller, I will be using a radiator setup. I am unsure what size radiator I will need. I was thinking of a swiftech MCR320 or a swiftech MCR320 combined with a MCR220, but am unsure.
I am cooling an AMD X2 3800+ with a Swiftech 5002-64T block and 320W peltier. The loop will also contain a graphics card, probally an ATI X2900XT.
Thanks
drop one of those 6x 120 that were at about $150.. look for them...

you could easily cool that with a BIX240 but I would go with a BIX360
if you dont care what it looks like go for whatever you can get

Bigger, more surface area, is better. You'll need all the radiator power you can get, we're talking tons of heat here. I'd get MCR320 and 220 together.

I used to manage ok on a dual 120 rad with some seriously loud fans.
But the more surface area the better.
bigger rad is almost allways better with TEC.

Sorry to hijack slightly but what rad would I be looking at to cool 449W (320W pelt + amd 3600+ at 2800MHz) of heat? I'm presuming multiple rads might be the order of the day but how many?

320W pelt plus that is going to be more than 449W, you're looking at around 600W...look at charts from thermochill, etc. thermochill pa120.3 dissipates 500W at 10C coolant/air temp difference, so with all that and a pa120.3 I'd expect a little more than 10C above ambient water.

I'd go with a single thermochill pa120.3, the 120.2 beat out the mcr320 by a few c, so imigine what the 120.3 would bring

I think somebody said they were sold for cheap in the US.. Just guessing, 2x the rads I placed in the link would kick ass
nice, but where would you house that?

just go and get one of these (http://www2.partstrain.com/partlisting/full/pontiac/bonneville/heater_core/1976/1978.html?ptc=S1171391678W45d204bec356b&ptk=1976+1977+1978+Pontiac+Bonneville+Heater+Core+-+Pontiac+76+77+78+Heater+Core) from the auto parts store. Mine only cost me 20 and 2 Min with a hacksaw.
why did you happen to hacksaw it?it did not fit in your case?

320W pelt plus that is going to be more than 449W, you're looking at around 600W..
I used the link in the ultimate TEC guide to work out my CPU output heat. It said it was 129W (Normal output is 65W for a 3600+)

You're not implicitly advocating my system are you? <=P
I'm cooling via KOYO race car radiator. Check my sig. ^__-

one of the ports has a flang on that makes it something like 3/4" so you would have to make a port for whatever you are putting it on to be 3/4" or just cut it off to be 1/2"

not a bad idea, as the car heatercores have to remove far more heat than a standard one

Yea wtf are you thinking if you were going to go with that rad just get a race car rad and put it out side ur window with a cars waterpump to go with it and you could just cool your pc that way who in there right mind would want a 9x120 rad? its so big and UGLY i worked at JLG and they have rads that fits into there Skytraks and there like 1000x120 about 10 times bigger than a car rad why not just get one of those puppys

It is not super but it has worked great for me so far. If you look in the tec gallory you can see it mounted on the back of my old case and tec. I am working on putting water in my new case but I don't think I will do the tec in this system.
what pump and block are you using in that configuration?
and sorry if I seem lazy, but I'm real busy with finals right now, do you mind posting either a link or an example of the temps?

Get a 1978 Bonneville heater core, slap a pair of 120mm fans on it. Works great, and is cheaper than the stuff you will find at computer stores online. Been using mine for the past 8 years with no problems. It cost me $35 brand new from Kragen Auto.

I use a D5 Danger den pump.
I use a 6002 swiftech water block
home made cold plate
as for temps I can tell you what I was running at but I couldn't get a good mount and I got a good bit of water with my cold plate. :( that is why I am not doing it on my main system this time. I plan on doing it on a system in the barn that I have crunching for WCG!

Ouch! mine cost me 19.95 +tax at advanced auto or auto zone. have had it for about 5 years now I think
