The following was chosen by my friend to put together this summer, he is in college and doesn't have to much money and would like to take down the cost of this build to $600. With the parts chosen it comes out to just above 800 with shipping. He plays WoW and some other mid range demanding games. He games on a ATI 200m right now and I feel so sorry for him. He doesn't do anything high stress as far as programs go. Though I do want this build to last him awhile.

Logitech Keyboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823126023 $12.99
Dont mind the keyboard. I just need some help with taking down this cost, we are purchasing on Newegg, and I would like to go Intel and for video go ATI, for motherboard I would like to keep it Gigabyte. Other than that no other factors that I can think of. Thanks much for any help.

Thanks for taking the time to look though. I guess he really cant bring down the price without taking down quality. Is there a different Video Card that would better suit a 17 inch monitor at 1280 x 1024? He mainly plays WoW so nothing fancy needed but I don't want him to be taking down the graphics to low again.

Can I ask what he has currently? Even if it's nothing special, the addition of a good graphics card, mem, or a newer processor can do wonders. Not nearly as exciting, but it isn't worth spending the money on components you won't be satisfied with....

He has a laptop with an AMD Turion64 @1.5ghz and 256 ram and an ATI 200m graphics unit, its a POS and I dont see how he is even gaming on it, when I get on I feel depressed.

If you're trying to keep it cheap this is definitely a case where I would go AMD. Intel just can't compete with AMD's low-end offerings. You could get:
3400+ Venice 2.2Ghz - $40 Shipped
ASUS A8V-XE - $45 Shipped
2x512MB GSkill RAM - $75 Shipped (You really don't need 2GB for WoW, especially with an X1650 holding the system back)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231079
EDIT: Also, that PSU is waaaaaaay overkill for the system you're building (which probably won't ever draw more than 300W tops). I would get either the Enermax Liberty 400W or the Antec NeoHE 430W. They both cost $88 shipped from NewEgg and both of them are on Tier 2 in the PSU listing (same as the Corsair HX series).

I took off 1gb ram , he is only playing WoW and stuff so not that big, down graded the mobo, and got a cheaper PSU. The final price is $633, he will have to order the stuff cuz I wont build him a comp with any more compromise. Thanks for the replies, and plz let me know if something still doesn't seem right.
Perkam I let him know about the price drop on it and he insists we get this build ordered. Its his loss I guess. Thanks for the info though.

That's how important it is for a pc to have 2gb atm.

Oh come on, assuming he's running WinXP, 1GB is more than enough for WoW and most new games.
But I don't know what made you pick the Pentium D 915..... you could not possibly make a worse choice. Look at any benchmarks, the thing is a piece of garbage and will get its ass absolutely handed to it by the $40 AMD 3400+. WHATEVER YOU DO, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T BUY THE PENTIUM D!!!

Go with an AMD 3600+ brisbane core and a cheap AM2 motherboard. If you want cheap, go AMD.

I know how he/you feel. im on a laptop (have been for the past 3/4years) and its really depressing watching my brothers play new games with graphics set to high. I'm only able to play CS:CZ properly and even that lags like hell sometimes.

Ok, so I guess Im sticking to the Intel and I will be getting the E4300. He has never owned nor has his family owned a computer with more then 256 ram. I think initially 1gb will do, and he can upgrade from there, thats another aspect I was trying to accomplish with this build that he be able to upgrade. Perkam I agree with you about the 2gb but his wallet does not agree. He insists that it not cost over $600, shipping not included.
I feel like Morpheus and I am showing him a whole new world of computing (him being Neo) although now that I think of it, the Pent D wouldn't help, beyond 200m graphics and 256 memory. Poor guy didn't even know that he could get a decent comp for under $1k, (hes been looking at Dell ads.)
Thanks though all I am getting a very certain feeling that this is almost set in stone. Now he just needs the balls to give me the money - he is very cheap.

QFT. Since the kid doesn't seem to know about or want to overclock, no point in going Intel at all.
Tell him to save more.
There is no point in buying a pc now, and having to upgrade in a few months or so..
Save more 'till you can order/build a quality system.

I am sure that I indicated a price budget and that I would like to go Intel and ATI and Gigabyte with this build.....I am asking for help with the build, I do not want to go AMD, no loyalty with Intel, strictly his preference. He may not know much about brands or processors but its his money, I along with the people who are nice enough to help me are just making sure he gets compatibility and that what he buys is decent for the money. Thanks again to Perkam, Vice, Kaze, L'enFer for helping me with this situation. :up:I know that these help with my build posts get kinda annoying after a while.

If you can fit the E4300 into his budget, pull the trigger already...you have a good build going there :)
