This is the mounting I built for my Mach1 to connect to an Abit AB9QuadGT motherboard:

mild steel plate 1/8"
Plasma Torch
Stainless Steel bolts
Armaflex adhesive insulation 1/8"
Liquid Electrical Tape
Rubatex insulation 1/2"
Blue painters masking tape

I painted the board (under the foam insulation) with liquid electrical tape, then my insulation scheme is:

Steel Plate (on the bottom of the board)
1/2" insulation compressed 50%
Liquid electrical tape
Motherboard
Liquid electrical tape
1/2" insulation compressed 50%
Steel plate (with 1/8" adhesive armaflex on both sides)
Phase change evaporator head with Arctic Ceramique

how high is that metal layer?

Hrmm, I do not recall (and did not write down) that dimension, but my Mach1 mounting head compresses the top layer of adhesive armaflex before the cooling die contacts the cpu.

TIM applied to the cpu was squished and disbursed very evenly when I did a test mount of the head.

I ran a no-load temp test with this ancient Mach1, rapidly achieved -46C (unloaded)
