View Full Version : Recommendations for pairing TEC with CPU

I have three rigs in play.
1. QX6700 with (being modded for quad core) a Vapochill LS
2. X6800 CPU currently on water
3. Fourth rig with unspecified 775 CPU (build in progress)

I have a brand new Swiftech MCW6500-T I want to use. If it can handle a quad core I might migrate the QX6700 to the number 2 rig, use the X6800 in the new build, and a QX6800 for the phase rig. Otherwise I might put the pelt block on the number 2 rig leaving the processors as listed above.

Also, number 2 has a PC Power and Cooling 850 watt PSU with one 8800 GTX and a Thermochill PA 120.2 with 4 Yate Loons in push/pull (NB also in loop). Would the existing PSU provide enuf power for the TEC in this scenario? Would the PA 120.2 suffice (I have a spare 120.3 I can install if need be)?

no the stock psu wont suffice, you will want to use a dedicated psu for a tec.

The block and 220watt TEC wont cope with quad core.

They are barely adequate with dual core when overclocked.
You can try it on your dual core, but performance may be no better than water alone.

And NO, your coputer PSU wont work well.

The 120.2 will probably be OK with TEC, but you will need louder fans.
Best solution will be to use the 120.2 and the 120.3 together, you can never have too much rad with TEC.

So using TECs with highly overclocked C2Ds and quadcores in general is not a great idea?
Just out of curiousity, what temps would you be getting with say a 245W TEC and a 4GHz C2D with 1.6V ish?

I am thinking about either getting phase, chilled water or a TEC. But TECs have a huge power consumption and I am not sure if temps would be that good.

seedomo was running almost an identical setup. (search for his thread)

Although I think his system was not perfectly setup he was only able to get around 50*c load, which is no better than water with C2D at near 4ghz.

For C2D you need a bigger TEC and a very well setup system for it to give decent temps.

I think that Philly_Boy used/ is using an MCW6500-T on one of his Core2 chips. Not sure if it's a QX6700 or if it's a Dualcore.
