Exactly how important is True-RMS? I just realized that the meter I bought last week doesn't have it. Should I return it and buy one with True-RMS? (I do note that the meter reads strange with inverters. Is there a meter that also reads peak AC voltage, since that's what really counts for direct rectification power supplies?)
And I've heard that for HVAC/R work, a meter rated for CAT III is highly recommended. Am I correct?

And for a current probe, is a TPI A296 sensitive enough to measure low DC currents (about a few amps, maybe down to 0.5A)?

BTW, I would like a meter that works great for PC, HVAC/R, automotive electrical, and general electronics work.

if working or building electronics you must have a accurate true RMS meter, if it's all bench work you may consider a bench meter, you can get some cheap on ebay even flukes older models, fist pic is a fluke, starting bid 19.99 no bids yet, a lot go for 20 to 40 dollars .if buying used make sure you get a operators manual and a guarantee it works or you can return for refund. New of course will cost more. bench meters tends to read more digit to the right of decimal point. Many used bench meter are sold without leads so ask. A good set of test can be from 20 to 40 dollars plus.

You can also get great hand held true RMS meters. Which will do the job for you.

A fluke 116 is a great meter, I recommend it for a first quality meter.New ones on Ebay go around 140.00 including shipping, thats a great price for the only multirmeter you will need, will last a lifetime if taken care of. read all the specs, reads capatance and K type thermocoupler. +you will need a clamp,or open jaw amp meter to measure high amprage,if you would need to do so. Go to flukes site their is a lot of information on multimeter's and types, even if you don't buy a fluke.Read the technical specs. nice to have a RMS meter that reads capacitance for capacitors also, unless you have a separate meter There even a help you choose section at the Fluke site iirc.
