another question... does the Samsung 226BW have the anti-reflective, glossy finish to its screen? or is it that anti-glare stype rough material (which im trying to stay away from!)
I don't think so
226BW is the best 22'' monitor anyway
Unless I have missed something and there are already MVA/PVA/IPS 22" models for a reasonable price

what is MVA/PVA/IPS?
sorry, im really new to lcd monitors.. :P
are there any 2ms 22" with that glossy screen? the picture is far clearer with it and i really dont want to upgrade this syncmaster 940b to one of the same matt finish, which i dont like (having seen the glossy surfaced ones - albeit 5ms ones)

The glossy screen is the one most people stay away from - the reflections are unbearable unless you have just the right place to put it.

good luck with that search :D; i think higher res in smaller screens would be a nice choice to have...but have only seen 1920x1200 in laptop screens at <22"
some people are going for the hp w2207 but i believe it is a glossy screen.
samsung are about to release a 24" 1920x1200 TN type panel (where you will see that 4ms ish response.), but obviously without the viewing angles and color response of S-IPS or S-PVA.
here's a guide i have looked at a bit: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=31&threadid=2049206&enterthread=y
samsung 226bw mayuse a Chunghwa or Au Optronics tn panel in most of their retail units now apparently (versus the original Samsung made panel; they also tried an AU Optronics made panel which was reportedly inferior to the samsung panel - dont have any feedback comparison between the chi mei and the original samsung panel)
Samsung SM226BW 2ms G2G 22"WS Samsung TN Film (LTM220M1) or AU Optronics TN Film (M220EW01)
LG 226WT is an equivalent option - i think it uses an lg-philips panel.
samsung TN panels seem to have better response times over the lg.philips.
While LG-Philips have more, higher picture quality/expensive S-IPS type panels (which sacrifice some response: 6-8ms)
Xtknight from Anandtech seems to be a fan of the NEC 20wgx2: which is a AS-IPS panel with 6ms gtg response - i think it is a glossy screen.
A lot of the bigger 24-30" screens use S-PVA type panels - great picture quality...lower response than the common TN
i also think glossies could be a pain (unless you're in a dark room)
if i wanted a good and cheap panel 226bw is probably wot id choose. - pretty sure it's standard antiglare hardcoat.

I have the 225BW and it is 1680x1050 resoultion.
Good for gaming, no refresh issues. Slight light bleed on edges, no dead pixels after almost one year of use.
I had a problem with the Gateway, thread in forum review on it.

Supposedly the LG 22" is one of the best, if not the best 22" monitor out now. It will have the same viewing angle problems that all TN panels have though.
And if you want 1920x1200, you have to go to 24".

note: there are many "variants" of the lg l226wt...some are "better" than others.
LG L226WT 5ms 22"WS LG.Philips TN Film (LM220WE1)
LG L226WTQ-SF 2ms G2G 22"WS TN Film
LG L226WTX-BF 2ms G2G 22"WS TN Film
i've heard that the "Q" version has ghosting issues.
i also think there is a glossy version available....not sure which model..
i remember that xtknight reckons that the original l226wt (without any of the suffix bs)is the one to get....like with the samsung 226bw they started to substitute "lesser" panels while retaining the same model number ...dodgy.

cant you put it hood on it like the Lacie monitors had?

Kinda negates the point of having a flat-panel monitor if you have to have some big ugly hood sticking out over it.

...so long as the panel is aesthetically pleasing, who cares what the picture looks like? :ROTF:
i've got a hood on mine (cardboard ) and it helps with glare and contrast....but it certainly is no fashion item  but i have a crt and it is an ugly lump to start off with...but i dont spend my days looking at a monitor carcase.

i dont care about the reflections as i play and mainly work in a dark room!!
