thinking of getting me a 22" CRT (2nd hand) because the are cheap and can put out a nice resolution, narrowed my chose down to a IIyama visionmaster pro 510 or a Compaq P1220 I could get the IIyama visionmaster pro 510 for about 60 euro or a Compaq P1220 for about 50 euro. personally I’m leaning towards the Iiyama sins I like the build quality… but I also wouldn’t mind getting the Compaq if that would be the better chose. One thing that you also want to look at is the refresh rate. I didnt see any refresh rates listed on those. If you dont know what refresh rate is, the faster the refresh rate is the less ghosting you will have in high FPS if you are gaming.
Holy :banana::banana::banana:. If you are buying them new, you will want to get an LCD. They are much cheaper. Well on newegg anyways.
22" LCD 2ms refresh rate.

Heres a pretty nicer reliable monitor

its a CRT not LCD so the Response Time is 0 ;) I do like them lcd but the are just to expensive for me at the moment and do not even come close to the resolution a 22" CRT can put out

The refresh rate is next to the resolution. I like the IIyama more personally. The power usuage is rediculous... 6.5hours running = 1kWh sheesh. Also, that 34kg makes it a beast to handle/carry. Better have a stable desk. I'll never go back to CRTs but if I had to pick between these two, the IIyama in a heartbeat.

still reckon lcd's are shyte....and yes i have looked at the current models.
the refresh rates are listed for the Ilyama and they look pretty standard to me.
i'm running mine now at 85Hz; got the colours adjusted nicely, and i feel quite smug looking at a great picture compared to those pixellated, backlight leaking, banding ridden pieces of LCD sheeeyyit. :hehe:
the sooner LCD's are dumped for SED, FED or OLED the better.
oh, and if i adjust my colours and contrast levels so they are really bad, i can make my crt look like an lcd,( but i have to lower the res to get more jaggies) :ROTF:
and as for ghosting; what's that?
and i CAN afford an LCD but there is no way i want one.

I will lol its only 35kg so that isnt that much to me :ROTF: dident you now that Dutch are the tallest people of this world :p:
but if you can find me a lcd that can do atleest 1840 x 1440 whit 2ms response time is for under 400 euro (here in holland) im all for it ;)
but sins the don’t exist (as far as I know, at least not for a price even close to that), does any one ells got to say any thing about witch one to get?
just be sure that u known u gonna risk ur eyes sitting infront of this display for a couple of hours
believe me , i am wearing glasses now cause i used to have a 21" crt for a long time

Wow I didn't know people still used CRTs. I've been using a Hanns G 19" Widescreen now for about a year, and i'll never look back. I have no ghosting, no backlight bleeding, and awesome colors. CRTs are an eye sore, and with today's LCDs there's no reason to have CRTs.

2ms? The CRT you listed is "1840 x 1440 / 86 Hz "
1000ms / 86hz = refresh rate in ms = 11.6ms
Your CRT will have a slower refresh rate than MOST lcds. Going to have to use some of those low resolutions if you want a refresh rate that beats lcds.
"640 x 480 / 160 Hz " ....then again thats only 6ms.

... calculating like that is like comparing apples whit oranges sins a crt will update a picture completely it will not show any ghosting or smearing and a lcd or tft would at low response time
but because the picture gets updated completely it could show as flickering witch can be hurtful to your eyes its there for necessary to run a crt at its highest possible refresh rate in that way it is also a lot less harmful to the eyes

Wow I didn't know people still used CRTs.
Until they make a LCD which is better than a 22" crt with diamondtron tube(20" wviewable btw), I dont see any reason to upgrade :)
I just replaced a 17 for my secondary rig with a 20" samsung widescreen and it's nice, but nothing beats a crt for gaming (maybe a plasma but only for size).
If you have a chance to buy a quality 2hand CRT monitor that is in good condition and haven't been used much it's much better deal than some cheapo LCD display with TN panel. LCD displays that rival the image quality of the best CRT displays use MVA or S-IPS panel and they cost +400e->.

Wouldnt trade my 22" CRT for a LCD if I got it for free, nothing out there today beats a well built properly set 22" diamondtron, unless its a 24" diamondtron ;)
1600*1200 @ 100mhz is sweet :)
Now that I thought about it I need a monitor for my new computer :D I was thinking that I'll buy a cheap 230e 20" widescreen tft, but now that I checked this thread I'm thinking about getting a used CRT display. There's a place here selling IBM ThinkVision C220p (http://reviews.cnet.com/crt-monitors/thinkvision-c220p/4505-3175_7-30809411.html) monitors (22"). Is that a good monitor?
edit. It has the diamondtron tube (...or atleast so says Lenovo's website).

i dont move my crt it just sits there like a lump at one corner of my desk.
i made a cardboard shadow mask thingy like lacie often put on their screens.
if i wanted portability..well that's another kettle of fish; i'd get an lcd....but i'd want to be very careful not to damage my new nec 20wgx2
also keeping an eye on led backlit lcd's if they ever go into mainstream production.

I can't believe people still defend LCD. The only reason LCD is a good technology is for portability and freeing up space. Do people really think LCD's (TV or PC) look better then other older technologies? In the video projection world CRT still reins king over those new fangled "digital projectors". People don't realize that those old huge CRT projectors were capable of 1080p resolutions (the current holy grail of TV resolution) years ago. And they do it with less SDE/SSE, ghosting, pixelation, and better color reproduction (blacks especially). Want to see something amazing, go look up a Sony G90 and see (if you can find any) how much they sell for still today. CRT is still a better performing technology then LCD and it always will be because it's inherent of the two technologies. LCD will continue to sell though because of convenience.
I don't care if a few of you don't believe me either. All I care about is for people to stop bringing in LCD to this guys thread. He said he has access to CRT monitors and thats what he wants.
Someone recommened me a widescreen gaming CRT
There are not that many widescreen crt's and If I remember right most of them are 24". I just bough a Compaq P1220 for 50€.

CRT still rapes LCD in overall IQ, and yes I've seen many new LCDs. However CRT is a little worse on the eyes + they are bulky.
I don't know about newer Compaq products, but all Liyama monitors I've seen were quite nice ;)

Only sony made a 24" CRT and was 16:10 format. Beautiful nonetheless.

I came a across a free 22" CRT about two years ago, still hae it, although its like 5+ years old, it still works GREAT!.
I hae often thought about going to LCD, (24" DELL) but, well its like 600+$.
Hell, you can find 20+" almost anywhere, if you know where/when to look.
Yes they are a BEAST of a piece of hardware, but well THEY LOOK SO MUCH BETTER.
