If you have decided like us to take a leap of faith in ordering a pair of ATI HD 2900XT cards for a CrossFire setup then the information that follows might be of interest to you

After going through our checklist which includes ensuring we had the proper OPEC friendly power supply and PCI Express 2.0 (8-pin) connectors, additional A/C cooling, noise canceling headphones, and a bevy of alpha and beta drivers, we decided it was time to see how these newly released cards perform in CrossFire for our upcoming P35 chipset article. Let's take a look at the early results and see who gets knocked out in the first round

Shintai, a topshelf quote indeed :D

i just hope nVidia doesnt jump on the 8-pin connectors train too with their next gforce release

I hope they lower power consumption.

qft .... i love what intel is doing with their CPU .. lowering power consumption or the same power consumption for their next gen CPU while having huge performance boost... they dont need to lower the power envelope everytime they release a new gen of CPUs , but stay in that range is important ... for CPU 65W to 100W ... but for GPUs ... i just dont know .. we might see a true 300W card, 2900Xt is only what 225W?

btw i thought P35 only has 16x + 4x??

edit:
ahh i see , so instead of 4x + 4x like what the 965 did .. its actually 16x + 4x now .. hmm cant wait for 16x+16x AMD790 for intel anyone?

The 8pin connector only has 2 more ground pins, so it ain't that important.

For those wondering, our cards generally had no issues running at 853/1000 provided we had notified the electric company of a pending power surge.

Hahaha....

you're wrong. one ground and one 12V. there just wouldnt be a point of 2 grounds, silly

I heard 2 grounds too.

i agree, with the lower power cpu's that just leaves us more headroom to crank them up. :)

No, it contains an extra 12V.

You can also see it here with alittle effort.

Nopes..I was wrong..its 2 extra ground.

p965 is 16x/4x crossfire
p35 is exactly the same thing 965 did.

975x is split 8x/8x

if they were to make a fair comparison it would be 965p vs P35

compare 975x to x38 that would be a better comparison except x38 is suppose to be full 16x/16x

Please review the diagram as it's clear there are 2 grounds used for pins 7 & 8. This would mean there are 3 12v pins and 5 ground pins. I assume this goes for any PSU using 8 pin PCIe

That really makes no sense to add 2 extra ground. They increase the 12V from 6.25A to 12.5A. But I dont get the 2 grounds.

tough power 1200 watt (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.futurelooks.com/uploads/409/1200W%25208pin.JPG&imgrefurl=http://www.futurelooks.com/409-CES-2007-Spotlight---ThermalTake-USA.html&h=224&w=400&sz=17&hl=en&start=8&um=1&tbnid=1WO0lnIfR6BXSM:&tbnh=69&tbnw=124&prev=/images%3Fq%3DPCIe%2B8-pin%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfir efox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26hs%3Dow5) appears to use the same 3 12v 5 ground

My understanding of this is that:
1, 6-pin PCI-e connector capable of drawing +12V up to 6.25A
1, 8-pin PCI-e connector capable of drawing +12V up to 12.5A

Through the slot, these cards will draw +12V up to 5.5A and +3.3V up to 3A.

8-pin = 150W
6-pin = 75W
PCI-E = 75W
