AMD Barcelona launch schedule up in the air
Shawn Chen, Taipei; Esther Lam, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 16 May 2007]
AMD's original plans to introduce Quad-Core Opteron (Barcelona) CPUs are unlikely to be on schedule with a concrete launch-time still unknown, according to sources at Taiwan server makers.
The sources noted that AMD has informed them that the introduction of Barcelona will be delayed until August or September, instead of the originally planned June. However, the sources also noted that this schedule is still subject to change. The Barcelona CPU samples they have currently are not the final versions and bugs are still being discovered, they added.
Some Taiwan-based server vendors commented that their confidence over AMD will be affected by the delay. Roadmaps for new product launches were mapped out by the vendors in 2006, and the delay of Barcelona will interrupt these schedule. Comments gathered from vendors show that the majority believe a critical impact will be seen amid Barcelona's delay.
Besides that the postponement may discourage confidence among server makers, AMD also has to face the potential threat from rival Intel whose 45nm-made Harpertown and Wolfdale-DP CPUs are still on schedule to be both launched as planned, according to sources.

AMD officials said recently that everything is going on plan. Anything else coming from "unknown" sources is just BS.

Let's hope the schedule will change and AMD releases Barcelona earlier.

last 2 digitimes articles really have me losing that last bit of confidence I had in them..... is the unknown source from Intel?

AMD officials said recently that everything is going on plan. Anything else coming from "unknown" sources is just BS.
Their "plan" is vague enough to support a launch anytime in Q3 and still meet it. In fact their CFO recently said Barcelona would launch in a "July/August" timeframe. Looks like that might mean August, or it might have slipped again to September.
AMD officials are also noted for saying things like "our gross margins will improve in Q1" on Dec 15, 2006. We all know how that turned out.
Henri Richard, in mid-April, claimed that the R6xx video card family would ALL launch in May-- "we don't do soft launches". We all know how that turned out.
In short, AMD officials don't exactly have much credibility these days.

The source is "taiwan server makers", according to the article.
The one quibble I think you could have is that June hasn't been in the picture for a while now... Rivet put the launch in "July/August" last week, and in those same comments, he put desktops "in our Christmas lineup":

That's as of May 10th.

Digitimes is Taiwanese and they have contacts at guess who , the motherboard makers which build 99.9% of the boards used on PCs&servers. They have a clue , rest assured.
It's fine with me for the Inq or Dailytech to post good/bad news as they are a hit or miss most of the time , but when it's in Digitimes , it is for real.

Who cares ?
Since when is a connection between release dates and technical details which are subject to human error ?

I've already delayed my April upgrade until June hoping for maybe a Barcelona & 2900XL but the R600 is so far not what I expected & Barcelona being delayed, DAAMIT!!
If it's not out by the end of august i'll just skip AMD for the next 18 months.

Good fricken god...we've known for a while now that we'd be lucky to see k10 desktop models before q4. OEMs will be eating any and all avaiable K10s well into q4 if not q1 2008.
That isn't all that bad if ppl aren't impressed by the 2900XT. They can go K10 + XTX in September/Nov.

This sounds pretty bad!
Even more when you consider I read that Poncho has 3 Intel Harpertowns in his hands NOW!

By the time K10 is out we are already choosing 3rd party coolers for our Intel Quantum computers..

Amazing how some intel fanboys are so pathethic...
Quad cores to arrive in 1Q 2007, with Intel's Kentsfield and AMD's K8L.
No AMD K8L processors until 2008, say sources
AMD to launch quad-core K8L platform in 3Q07
AMD may remain at low-point until launch of AM2+ and K8L in 3Q, say motherboard makers
Just type K8l in the search box, it makes the Inq look good, and nice to see June is 3Q for Digitimes.
Now go see above some coments by the usual suspects and laugh a little at their stupidity.

If true, this is bad news for AMD.
After Intel's July 22 -50% price cuts, AMD wont be generating any significant profits from desktop K8 (or desktop K10 for a long time yet).
Further, they wont be generating significant profits from the 2900 GFX cards. K10 server was supposed to be their main profit generating center in 2007.

What you miss here by a mile is that one company had rock solid execution and kept by its word while the other constantly overpromised and underexecuted.
It's not Digitime's fault that the later company pushes the launch date constanly.
Digitimes was/is dead accurate on Intel.
On AMD is less than stellar , but that's because AMD spits crap even to its mobo partners and fails to execute by its own deadlines.Which is hardly Digitime's fault.
Why do you think that this story surfaced in Digitimes after all ? Because they are the best informed.By who ?
Still, some Taiwan-based server vendors commented that their confidence over AMD will be affected by any delay. Roadmaps for new product launches were mapped out by the vendors in 2006, and the delay of Barcelona will interrupt these schedule. Comments gathered from vendors show that the majority believe a critical impact will be seen amid Barcelona's delay.
Do you think companies are happy when their roadmaps are going down the drain due to someone else's fault ?
That is the same crap that AMD did last year with Socket F Opterons which were delayed several months. As a result SUN went out with its new Galaxy line with the older DDR based Opteron only to be made obsolete in a month by the new Socket F version.
Was SUN happy ? I bet not.And rest assured that the bitter experience in the summer of 2006 had an impact on their decision to adopt Intel Xeon from 1S to 8S servers altough the ubber Barcelona was right around the corner.
Maybe they knew something more about AMD's execution and didn't bite again...
But , then again , I don't expect you to understand anything more than "K10/Barcelona/10h rules !".

DigiTimes was wrong before, especially about "native" Penryn based MPU,and it's been known as a fact for a good while now that it is NOT a native quad core part.
Track record goes back to K8 introduction times(and their "reliable" sources") and there are more examples...

Everyone: "Whatever."
Digitimes is not the most accurate source.
