View Full Version : Should I reseat my HSF?

I've just upgraded my CPU to a core 2 duo, from a Pentium D.

I'm using a Freezer 7 Pro HSF, and have noticed it's rotating at a speed beyond it's rated 300-2500 (-+10%) RPM, at around 29XX RPM.

It's been suggested that the heatsink isn't seated correctly.

I did have some trouble getting it back on, the teeth were splayed open more then they would have been as new, so they wouldn't readily go back in the holes. I did eventually get it back on, and it feels secure in place, I believe.

The other thing is, I'm pretty sure I applied too much AS5 (... and yes, I did remove the old stuff before applying it). I think I used the equivalent to perhaps three grains of rice. I was aiming for a thin line, but it didn't really work out like that.

The temperature at idle (non-overclocked) is around 28C, which doesn't seem at all high, but I'm not sure what the normal idle temperature for a (E6600) core 2 duo is.

So to reiterate; my primary concern was the RPM of the HSF, but after someone suggesting that the seating of the HSF could be the issue, I'm a little worried about that.

Should I take it apart and re-do it?

Okay, so the heat sink aside, do I have any cause for concern with the fan RPM? It's four hundred+ RPM beyond the rated speed. Even factoring in the -+10% it's still a few hundred faster then it should be.

might be a fan speed read error (software does that sometimes)? there should be a noticable sound difference between a couple hundred RPM on a fan. You hear anything different?

I wouldn't be able to tell to be honest, I have 2 x 250mm fans (a+ case/x-clio twin engine) and 1 x 120mm fan, obviously excluding the CPU and GPU fan. It's not very quiet.

Both SpeedFan and PC Probe II give a similar reading, so I don't know if that makes it any more conclusive.

I'm not particularly worried about the speed it's running at*, I'm just worried it's going to burn itself out prematurely.

* I presume I can manually set the RPM when I'm ready to quieten the system down?

400rpms is faster than it should be? wowzers
