okies I just found out that I'm pretty much out of luck with the AMD platform if I want to keep my x1600 agp and my 1 gig 2x512 corsair xms 3200 DDR
not really any boards out there that will let me upgrade piece meal :(
I'm looking at this board right now it could be a good transition since when I upgrade the memory and vidcard later I will respectively go for broke. Hence when I get ddr2 I will get like ddr2 10000 instead of the 6400 I'll probably need and with a real monster of a vidcard thereafter.
This is the board I'm looking at: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813157107&ATT=13-157-107&CMP=OTC-pr1c3watch
this would work with both, however there are so many choices of cpu's what would give me a significant performance increase without spending too much money this thing says it supports "Quad-core / Core 2 Extreme / Core 2 Duo / Pentium" now the question is which one there are like 50 choices out there

My system now :
xp 2600-M overclocked of course (usually between 2300 and 2400 mhz depending on the dust level inside the case) on a nf7-s v2.0
radeon x1600 avivo agp (didn't have a pci express slot best I could do)
1 gig of corsair 512x2 xms one 3200 ultra low latency(warrenty replacement) and one xms3500 module
2x 300 gb 16mb seagates in raid o configuration
one pci hd tuner from avermedia
and a hauppuage pci 150 tuner

I would look at this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115013

but without knowing how much you want to spend can't say for sure. This one is OK:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116253

but the E4300 will blow it away IMHO

how much faster is the e4300 than an old xp2600-m clocked at xp 3400 performance rating?

E4300 can be a great overclocker depending on the week/batch code. You will be blown away by the performance difference when compared to the 2600.

how about the E2140/2160 cpu. these are based on the e4300 but only 1 mb cache. these are good clocking dirt cheap cpu's

That E4300 at stock would :banana::banana::banana::banana:-slap that 915 up and down. I've run my PD at 4.5, benched and all, and I'd still get my ass kicked by an E63//E64 easy... :(

They are not released yet.

I'm planning an E2160 + Gigabyte P35-DS3P (+ A-Data 2×1GB 800+ EE Micron,
they are dirt cheap now) step up from my Barton when they become available.
I think that's the most bang for the buck with a bit of future upgradeability (P35
supports 45nm chips). For simple bang for the buck, something like a P965-S3
and 2×1GB 667 ram can save you a few more bucks, and still have a nice oc.

Yeah question is is it worth oc'ing it now to e6600 levels with the memory divided I mean that xms 3200xl (warrenty replacment they should have replaced both :() and xms 3500 stick can't go to 533 no matter how I slice it, although true dual channel will be nice 6400 MB/s vs 3200 on athlonXP systems. :P Can't get the 2 or 4 gig's of ddr memory just yet :(
