Question about L2 cache.....

If you have a quadcore which has 8mb (4x 2mb) L2 cache, will you have access to all 8 if your only using 1 core? I was just curious cos I have no need for 4 cores but having 8mb L2 cache will be hella cool.....

i think each core has access to 4mb in kents. could be wrong though, but since kents is two cores, i figure it so

It's 2 Conroe dies. So it'll only work toghter or single

Conroe 4mb 2 cores running, single mode

Kentifiled 8mb 4 cores running, dual mode

Kinda hard to explaine.

Question then comes to why buy a meaty cpu if you dont need it at all

Ok thanks, I kinda get it..... I was just thinking on how much better the 4mb C2D vs the allendales in superpi and were only using 1 core..... So if you can run 1 core but have 8mb cache in a quadcore then thats gonna fly..... I have no plans on getting a quad and more so now ......
