Today Bill came down to mine and we built a small single-stage. I don't actually know any specs about the unit apart from it has Danfoss NL11F, 3 row condenser and an acumulator lol  .
Anyway here are some pics;

Vacuumed the unit for about half an hour or so to make sure Bill's vac pump worked ok :)

This unit is still far from finished but we will be working on it again soon. We still need to do the electrics, bolt everything to the base, screw the fan into the condenser, vacuum it out properly, insulate and some other things. We will update the thread as it is progressed :).
Also something I learnt when we were working on this unit, I now know why LittleDevil gets NL11F's so cheap. I never knew they were made in Slovenia :D.

Yea took us sometime and the weather was crap ive got it in my shed vacuumed for 3to 4 hours then put the compressor oil in and vacuume it twice more over night to make sure its dry as a bone lol.
How much oil dose the Danfos N11f use ? I plan to fill it before bed then vac it
till morning then give it a squiirt of gas then vac again tripple vac :),

Lookin pretty decent, that and that r23 you now have has some serious potential.

the thing that impresses me most is the case! powder coated blue? if you don't mind i would like to see some more pics of the case, front/back? should see some nice temps out of that. Im getting a similar SS soon

Nice work there brettbeck, very clean looking, where abouts did you get that large accumulator from mate, been looking everywhere in the UK for some?

Hi Teyber. I think the case is one from Dimas. We will have plenty more pics of the case soon :).

Bill got them from Hot Frost I think. They are a bit of a pain when brazing becuase they take all the heat from the tube you try to braze in lol. We were using a size 2 BOC nozzel at first and it just couldn't cope. We put size 5 on and bobs you uncle worked great lol :D.
BTW, this is Barnsley-Bill's unit :), not mine.

I'd use 270cm^3. As its been said before we have much smaller systems.

True , that was from Danfoss

I might sound dumb but is that 320ml mate

Yes, since a cc is a ml of water if I remember correctly.

Will look forward to some more pics and some temps.hehe Oh post Low and high side pressures if thats ok. Just curious as all ways. :p:
Again great work. :)

Update  !!
We had some problems with the electrics yesterday, so today we went to our local refrigeration supplier and got a new relay for the NL11F. The motor in the compressor now fires up perfectly :).
Also we were both told that all new compressors come bone dry with no oil in. So, Alan filled the compressor with some proper POE oil and was then notified that the compressors do infact come pre-charged with oil. So last night at about 12am I went and choped the compressor out and drained the oil overnight.
At the refrigeration supplier today we got a nice 4.5litre jug of oil which I have been told can be used with any compressor and gas and works great, and so it does :).
Also went to BOC today and got Alan an oxygen bottle on rent for his brazing kit :D.
Unit was charged at first with just 2.5bar static, which wasn't enough. We kept adding small shots and then the temperature plumeted to -49°c :). We were going to use Alan's new refrigeration scales to tell you guys exactly how many grams the unit took but it needed a new battery so it wasn't possible.

Something that we were both gobsmacked at was how quiet the compressor actually is  ! When we fired it up the only thing we could hear was the fan... we thought the compressor motor wasn't even running at first. Ran quite cool too, after about 30mins running it was just warm.
Alan has a 300W cartridge heater which we will use to load test and tune the unit sometime soon. Stay tuned for more results :).
looks nice and seems to perform good, but I would chech the suctionpipe, seems like you bent it little to much without a bendingtool.. may affects the suctionpressure.

And a shot of my dirty finger nails lo.
Yea i couldnt believe it was running when we first turned it on all you can hear is the fan running it could do with some kind of fan control.
I have to thank a few people who helped me out with the parts
Gray Mole for the case evap enclosure and other bits thanks mate a great help
cold Ice for the great compressor cap tube and other bits Ill Be sure to deal with again a great service
Dimas Tech for the condenser's fans and flexline same as great servce and shipping .
and everyone else for the info and good reading.
When i sort out the 300 watt cartridge heater we will be able to tune it for a load and see what temps we get then all together we are realy pleased with it after a few leaks and other bits and bobs.

@ tim- - I think we used a bending tool on that piece of tube but it wasn't tight enough, so we carefully made it a bit tighter and it kinked just a little bit. Unit seems to work fine really, the suction pressure stays constant when running.
i suggest to make a new coppet tube from the accumulator to the compressor.
that bend isn't good for the system ;)

Your cooler is very nice. What made you decide to splice the captube?
Barnsley-Bill
05-29-2007, 11:29 AM
It was a bit too short so instead of replacing the lot we spliced it.
it was the first build i have done 'with the help from brett' so things can only get better i hope lol.
once i rig up this dummy heat load tester we can charge it to a bigger load and see how it performs.
I had fun building this one and brett taught me things iwould have missed Plus keeping me in food and drink while at his lol cheers mate.
very nice work guys well done on this build
it looks great

We will see what it's like under load and if there are any problems it will be replaced :).

Yeh as Alan said the evaporator only had a small piece of captube on it, so we added a few bits that were lying round to get it up to 2.7m :p: .

Nice one Bret, have you tried a bit more refrigerant in there mate as it is pull a deep vacuum and the high side pressures are not that high, and as you are only using 404a you wont have to much of a problem when you get some load on there, as the others have said try and change the suction copper work as it is dented and will restrict the flow a bit, also try getting the pipework a bit higher going into the compressor as this will help with any flood-back.
anyway very nice work.

Cheers Sacha! That was only a quick test really, I know it's 'bad practice' to run the system in vacuum, but once we have put a load on the evaporator I would hope the lowside pressure rises to around 0psi.
If there are any problems that piece of tube that has a small kink in it will be replaced :).
EDIT: There appears to be a problem with the picture hosting, please bare with me on that, I will get it sorted ASAP!

Just checked and the bandwith has been exceeded (quite a lot :D ).
I have some other web space with 20GB bandwith which needs to be set up, then the pictures will be put on there :). Will sort this asap.

Now I just have to upload a few hundred more pictures and re-set the url's for them in any of my threads, how exciting :D.

Not yet teyber, I will probably speak to Alan tonight though and see how that load tester is coming along, if he's had time to build it yet :).
I have 2 weeks of really important exams the following weeks so I doubt i'll be very active on the forums. Maybe if Alan gets the load tester working he will be able to have a go at tuning it himself :). I'm sure he will post results if he does.

Ha! Wait till you see my accumulator. It dwarfs that thing. That looks like a plumbing shock tube. Am I right?
Brettbeck
06-01-2007, 04:04 PM
It's a proper copper spun acumulator used for refrigeration applications... about 15cm length with 3/8" fittings on each end. I made an oil sep out of one the other day to go on my cascade :).
That acumulator is actually kind of big for a single-stage that size. I believe Alan currently has some smaller ones on order.
