Not when you consider what you get. This card will basically be the best sounding gaming card on the planet... I bought my X-Meridian for $200 and it was worth every penny once I heard the sound...
Thats £130 Pounds thats around $260.

Auzen X-FI™ Prelude 7.1 Release Update
Santa Clara, CA -June 4, 2007: Auzentech, Inc. (www.auzentech.com), developer of the world's first Dolby® Digital Live and DTS® Connect PCI sound card, announced today a revised shipping date of the end of June for the company's new sound card based on the Creative X-FI™ chipset.
The revised June 2007 release date for the Auzen X-FI™ Prelude 7.1 is a response to confirmed parts availability. The original date -- based on projected parts availability -- had placed the ship date near the end of May.
Auzen X-FI™ Prelude 7.1 will fully support EAX 5.0 and have the same expandability as the Auzen X-Meridian™ 7.1. Support for Dolby® Digital Live real time encoding for Vista is scheduled for Q4 of this year. The soundcard marks the first time Creative has permitted a third-party soundcard vendor to use the Creative X-FI™ chipset in its own soundcard design.

Odd, it seems the ASUS will handle EAX 2.0 according to the first slide here (http://www.vr-zone.com/index.php?i=4860&s=2), while the Auzentech Prelude is reported to support EAX 5.0 here (http://www.guru3d.com/newsitem.php?id=5394).

Because the Prelude will use the X-FI DSP. That part of the sound card will be no different than any X-Fi except the Xtreme Audio that's not really an X-FI anyway. Though I didn't touch the XMeridian, I will look forward to this one. I couldn't see paying that much money for the XMeridian and not get the best gaming support. I wasn't about to use two cards either LOL!

I meant that I thought it was odd that a card that isn't even released yet, (the Asus Xonar), doesn't support even EAX 4.0 that the Audigy 2s support.

because Creative has the rights to EAX and do not easily give them up ...
there must be a hot chick working for auzentech who gave a creative employee a good time

Asus says that there arent many games using eax 5.0 while most use eax 2.0.
Which are the key differences between the two versions?
I also like the insulation of the asus card.
Keep in mind that I dont care a sh*t about digital output. The Senn 595 are analog arent they?

What about EAX 3 & 4 and OpenAL?
The Prelude will have full support for EAX 1,2,3,4 &5 and OpenAL all in Hardware...
The Asus Xonar has a 8788 chipset in it similar to the X-Meridian, Sondigo inferno, B-Enspirer..etc/
Asus may have rebranded the chipset but it doesn't change the features-it is a normal 8788 chip.

Why would Asus say anything different?

Eax up to 2.0.
Open AL will be supported some way but not out of the box.
I have never heard how the 8788 sound. What I can tell is that the creative x-fi sounds metallic, high pitched and unnatural over the my beautiful Tannoy loudspeakers. This disabling any effect and compared to a terratec dmx/6 fire that will be still used for music listening on the other machine.
For gaming things go a little better. How will sound the Prelude? Will their DAC make it a completely different and musical card? I hope so. On paper is the best I could get to play games and occasionally listen to some music.

You misunderstand the meaning of my post. You said Asus said most games use EAX 2.0 and not many use EAX 5.
What about games that use EAX 3 or 4?
They forget about all those games aswell?
Most of the 8788 chipset card I have heard do sound great. Some sound alot better then others such as the X-Meridian 7.1 or Razor AC-1. You do, however pay a premium price for these cards. These cards have amazing sound quality out of the box but lack some of the some features gamers like. I would say that they are aimed more towards the HTPC crowds and/or audiophiles.

EAX 2.0 is nothing compared to EAX 3, 4, and 5. Auzen knows it and that's why they're going to use the X-FI for their card aimed at Gamers. Maybe Asus should do the same. One thing's for sure, with the Asus name stuck on it, it will cost more:down:
Again, folks have moded the X-FI and loved the results. All Auzen will do is ship one (X-FI Sound Card) already moded LOL!

The 8788 cards I have had a chance to listen to sounded great. I usually just had the chance to hear them playing music or quick video clips. I would suggest if your considering moving to the 8788 based line, review the X-Meridian 7.1. If you are into gaming and want EAX/OpenAL extension and features I suggest possibly looking towards the Auzen Prelude 7.1.

As you can see from my signature I have two systems and I dont plan to listen to music (except occasionally) with the gaming rig in which there is currently an x-fi. But before building this I tried the x-fi in the other system and my ears didnt like it a single bit.
Otherwise, for music listening i'm very happy with my old dmx6 fire, which also my tannoy appreciate.
I was thinking what to get to replace the x-fi in the gaming rig, because i WILL replace it - creative drivers got over my nerves :) I'll use only the hearphones with it, the Senn HD595.
I think I'll head safely towards the Prelude. You folks have clarified most of my doubts.

That would be your best move given the current line-up form all manufacturers.
Be advised for sound quality you will get from the Auzen Prelude you will have to spend some money. It will be well worth it.

Well, with the 2.13 drivers now i have sound in vista x64. No way to fix the drivers on the 2003 i fear. Half good. I'm in no hurry to change my x-fi, but i'll sell it when i get the auzen and so it'll help with the cost.
Moreover, do you know if it has a front bay (for earphones plug)?

The picture clearly shows a Pin header. It looks very similar to the AUD_EXT header found on some Audigy and X-Fi cards. If it is compatible with current Audigy or X-fi drive bays has not been published. It is more then likely they will be developing their own devices to use this pin header. There will be a HDMI 1.3 X-Tension board being released for the X-Meridian 7.1, it will however be compatible with this card also.
