View Full Version : AMD Radeon HD 2900 XT overclocking results
Sampsa

Hi everyone,
Since AMD's Radeon HD 2900 XT launch is coming up I thought it would be proper to start a thread for overclocking results of this card. I currently have one card to play with but since the NDA is still up, I won't post any results yet.
http://plaza.fi/s/f/editor/images/0502tunis3.jpg
I'll be posting info and numbers when it's possible. I know Kinc also has the card since we met in Tunis so some results should be coming from there also :toast:

Update 3/5/2007:
http://www.techpowerup.com/img/07-05-03/tool1.gif
techPowerUp! has AMD GPU Clock Tool available for download which can change R600 2D/3D clocks and lets you monitor temperatures of the card. It also works on RV610, RV630 and all previous products.

Awesome, can't wait to see these results, especially from someone high up in the game. I hope these results are going to what the end user can except from a retail purchased card however. Cherry picked core and volt mods suck for everyday results.

Apparently on May 14th.
I donno what's the point of starting this thread with almost 2 weeks before any actual results can be posted. :slap:

I'm really liking this card from an engineering standpoint according to everything I've heard but I'm wondering how good the software drivers are. I want to use Linux as well as Windows and generally Nvidia has had better Linux drivers. If the drivers are good I would love to get this card and put it on water and overclock the heck out of it. I wonder if they will come out with drivers to get crossfire to work on Nvida AM2 motherboards since most AMD motherboards out now use Nvidia chipsets.

Criticize NDAs all you want, but it's not as if there was some perfect pre-NDA world in which information flowed freely. The alternative is not having hardware samples to review until after launch. This way we get a lot of information from many different voices (most of them unbiased) at the moment a product launches.

I will stick with NDA unlike some other people who attended Tunis event and already posted pretty much all the details of the card. There are also quite alot false information floating around the internet regarding Radeon HD 2900 XT.. main source is one particular site which is not so hard to guess.
Anyway, there is actually quite alot overclocking headroom in R600 GPU and AMD GPU Clock Tool seems to be working just fine. I had a problem with Powerstrip beta-version which was limited to driver's limits. Now we just need to wait for new version of ATITool which brings voltage adjustments for R600 and I'll run tests under dry ice cooling. Hopefully that'll be next week.
PS. 1000/1000 MHz clock speeds at techPowerUp!'s screenshot are pretty modest :fact:

yes thats right i read somewhere that you can still use the 6 pin pcie on the 8 pin one on the card if you have one available to use like you have 4 x 6 pcie power 6 pin cables as on a quad sli psu like the tagan 1100 as an example so you could still have 2 power adapters on each card

Those who like to build with watercooling will find the perf. gain from building with a high end watercooling system very pleasing.

hi there the mounting holes accordingly are the same as on the x1900 cards so it should be fine its only the full cover waterblocks which cover the ram etc which may be a problem with these new cards as the pcb is different but the maze 4 which just covers the core should be fine

shim around the GPU is little bit higher than GPU so you might have to remove it when using your own cooling solution..
but OEMs (8.5") get 0.9ns Samsung.
There won't be such a card released atleast yet so no need to speculate which memory it uses

I know everyone is excited over the top end products, but has anyone gotten a hold of any solid info/benches on the RV630? I am curious to know how the lower end parts fare with overclocking? I am hoping its not another overheating Digital VRM fiasco, aka x1950pro. Being a 65nm part, it should be easy to cool with a decent air setup I would imagine.

All I'm gonna say is, 3dmark scores mean jack in relation to real gaming performance that I am experiencing.
Just wondering if anyone with this card can say whether this statement is true or not, for better or worse?

3D Mark03/05/06 numbers cannot reflect real gaming performance in ALL CASES.
But...these comments from who ? HardOCP ? huh, sounds like fun ( ooh, and reminds us of the old funny days with hOCP vs FutureMark :D ) [ and some more... now let me stop :D ]

Haha yea i know, but the [H] is considered fairly reputable, (though im not buying into anything until i see benches from everyone) just wondering if these dont perform as well as they might seem they would in real life gaming, especially at high res, high AA/AF.

I think the best advantage that the HD2900XT has is the fact that ATI has connections with Microsoft so it can make better Dx10 drivers than Nvidia. These numbers are pretty sweet indeed but if you buy this card, you probably buy it for it's Dx10 function. So i want to see some hard Dx10 numbers before i'm convinced :para:

i find the scores a bit disappointing(but good at the same time), was hoping ATI could have pushed the envelope just a bit further. this is competing with GTX, but not really exceeding it perhaps maybe by a little bit. still its good news with the price of these(after gouging), should force Nvidia to lower theres. now maybe I can start to dream of next gen cards being released at a lower price than last time around..........yeah im sure its just a dream.

They cant post ANYTHING UNTIL 5/14!!!!!! :nono: :fact:
Obviously question #1 is which drivers were used. Second thing is, they show both AM2 and Conroe hardware in the system specs, and a few motherboards. This is a huge flaw because if they ran the ATI tests on the AMD platform, we all know its gonna be worse than if it was run on the Intel setup.
And 3rd and most important thing is: show me stock 3dmark numbers. They don't mean much to me, but I use them as a reference when looking at results.
This review tells me nothing besides the fact that the author wasted his time and ours...

Initial samples of R600 do have Inter-Layer Dielectric (ILD) implemented. (http://www.semiconductorglossary.com/default.asp?searchterm=dielectric)
in short, it is a tech that enables transistors to work under xtreme conditions, the con of this technique is that it will increase power consumption a lot~!
however, it is also said that the mass production version by TSMC does not feature this technique. so just wondering how is the overclocking headroom for retail R2900XT as compared to these samples sent to media, lol.

il 3DMark e' insufficiente dopo la storia dell' AA che perderebbe gia a 3x il 15% delle prestazioni, bisognerebbe vedere sotto lo stesso gioco a parità' di piattaforma e di impostazioni, come si comportano le due schede....

3d mark is not enough because of the fact that the AA will make a loss of 15% overall performance, it is needed also to bench the same game with same platform and settings, to analyze how the two cards bench...
The question is: why who has this ''uknown'' card never shows this kind of camparizon between GPUs in one or more games?

Here we go, unfortunately this Thursday was public holiday here in Finland so I'll get dry ice next week:
http://plaza.fi/s/f/editor/images/0519_r600_dia1.png
According to AMD's document R600's recommended maximum operating temperature is 105 Celsius and 125 C is the absolute maximum. Beyond this ASIC will be damaged.
http://plaza.fi/s/f/editor/images/X-20070519142802406.jpg
R600 XT GPU TDP is 160 watts and each memory chip two watts = total board TDP 225 watts
http://plaza.fi/s/f/editor/images/0519_r600_oc1.jpg
Shim is little bit higher than GPU itself so a friend of mine made 1 mm copper cold plate for better contact. Unfortunately shim is glued very tight around the R600 and very hard to remove with razor blade. G80's heat spreader is very nice feature when installing container.
http://plaza.fi/s/f/editor/images/0519_r600_oc2.jpg
Here is my aluminum solid container installed on Radeon HD 2900 XT. I modified heatsink from Radeon X1800 XT to PWM components.

Sampsa--This may be a rather mundane question...
When using that copper coldplate, do you apply thermal material inbetween both contact areas of your block(s) or just inbetween the GPU/coldplate?
And for those of us who aren't machinists, where could we pick up a 1mm piece of copper like that? Lowe's or Home Depot, possibly? Does anyone know the exact specifications of the shim area?

Hey Sampsa...AMD GPUTool works for overclocking both cards at once...simple set speed for slave card first, gpu first, apply speed, then mem, apply speed, and then do the same for primary card.
second card no overclock:
15665:
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=1994728
to clocking second card: 15895:
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=2007645
You are runing different drivers. That should be why there is a difference in the perf.
cadaveca

Um, no, i watched the scores rise until I reached the max of teh card to confirm. It started @ 15553, and went up a wee bit each time i raised clocks on the slave card(25mhz each time). Used driver from teh sappire isntall cd, updated to the driver from the site, and gave it a go.
Overdrive was unlocked and set to maximin speeds, AMDGPUTool overrided these settings, confirmed by running with tool closed, and then with tool open @ lower speeds, and the difference in score.
Tried it again this morning, ot confirm i jsut didn't drink too much last night :lol2:, and it still works.;)
Give it a go...works here..feel free to come over and see for yourself lol but I DID copy the wrong link nice catch Kinc.

Yep. same speed, verified it each time before the run using CCC. was weird to see teh mex available in CCC change when doing this, but whateva.:D
N-E way, the 155xx was one stock, 156xx i one overclcoked, 158xx is two. I have links of same approximate scores using all the same driver, not too sure what is going on...:stick:

Which one? using that same psu on RD600 right now w/ 2 x R600...just don't plug in the floppy connectors!

issue is that the floppy connectors are on rail 5, while other mobo power is rail 1/2. This creates a "short" in psu, adn the system will not start, and PSU will beep at you.
So, you either get some molex/floppy adapters, and use the 2nd 8-pin cable w/molex adapter, or you do not connect them @ all.(not connected here, works a treat: http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=2017986)
Silverstone works because of rail config. You might be pushing it with a second card, but i doubt it.
First 8-pin pci-e connector is rail 1/2 as is cpu, and second 8-pin pci-e is 1/2/3, so you end up with a high load on those rails. thankfully 24a on each is jsut about sufficient, but I have noticed lower clocks on my quad after adding teh second card.
My cpu is power hungry tho...1.25v all the way to 3.2ghz, but darn it all if vdroop ain't .09v!!!

yes, its also listed on AMD site of certified PSU. and hopefully you will get newer version with 2 6pin AND 2 8pin pci-e connectors. mine is on its way although NO one could confirm for me if it was the newer version.

First test with dry ice. Unfortunately R600 + Aluminium solid container and 1 mm copper cold plate between them is not the optimal configuration for this kind of heat load. Also adjusting the contact for perfect is really tricky.

Pretty lame clocks on Radeon HD 2900 XT so far: 950 / 1030 MHz. Positive thing is that it feels like my QX6700 week 32 ES is working ALOT better on DFI's RD600 motherboard compared to nF 680i SLI platform with 8800 GTX SLI.

what the better chipset for crossfire with these cards the 975 or P35.
Pretty lame clocks on Radeon HD 2900 XT so far: 950 / 1030 MHz.
First i have to say that your results always kick ass.:rocker: But what i really wanted to know is why are you using only 1030mhz on the mem, i know it can do more than that because mine can do 1130 with AmdGpuClockTool easy. Does the score really decrease if you go pass 1030mhz or is there something else.
malik22, i think that 975 is faster but that´s just my opinion.

For 24/7 usage?
Sure LN2/D.I./Cascade cooling is fun, but 24/7 gaming ready is what matters.
could not agree more, stability for gaming is a must vs benchmarks for like 30 seconds.8 hours of a kik ass gaming session is what u bought your video card for.just set it to safe clocks and actually enjoy it without blowing it up the second u get intro a jet at 2530x1536 and really put a load on it.u can bench on a 5200 ffs.not to many true gamers anymore around seems.i guess benching is cool but i would rather play games then try and roast my new hardware for months .set it up 2-3 days find stable\safe speeds, run some benchies for e-penis bragging rights then enjoy it by gaming on it?weird me.only seems like guys wanna bench everyday then game anymore, heh.
play some bf2 on it for 4 hours and see how "real world stable" it is.

Please keep in mind that hardware I'm testing are mostly early Engineering Samples, not retails products. 1030 MHz seems to be the limit for this card under stock cooling.

It's not that bad but in this first test the focus was on GPU contact mainly and to get a feeling how HD 2900 XT behaves under cold. I can't say contact was perfect. With nF 680i SLI platform I couldn't push my QX6700 more than 4,3 - 4,4 GHz under dry ice cooling and heavily overclocked 8800 GTX SLI configuration but again, I was using early Asus and EVGA review sample boards.
Same old phrase applies here, there is plenty to improve :) I'll keep posting here when something new happens.
I have two 8800 Ultras here and new Asus Striker Extreme board so I'll give them a try also :)

Experimental version of ATITool - it can only read the clocks at this point.
Vmem was at default. Vgpu at around 1.42V.

atitool will be released when he gets it stable i'm sure. you can imagine the difficulties in getting it to work properly with a completely new chip. and it still has to function properly with the existing gpu's. i would rather wait for it to be right than deal with all the problems of an unstable tool.
keep in mind that wizzard makes this tool for all of us for free!!!! complaining about it is just wrong!!!
