View Full Version : Q6600 Vs E6600, when are they equal in performance?

Ok, so I'm wondering are there any benches that show for certain scenerios, how fast an E6600 needs to be clocked to, to be equal in performace to a Q6600.
I'm thinking If im playing any newer DX9 Game, some thing like an E6600 @ 3.5 Ghz would be more Ideal then a Q6600 @ 3.0Ghz? Is this correct? But with a DX10 game I'm not sure, I would think maybe the Q6600 would be more ideal? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I couldn't find any good information on it. I'm also curious about Superpi and 3dmark comparisons?

unless the game is multi threaded and can take advantage of the extra cores, I'm not sure you'd see an improvement with a quad.

ive noticed that if you play with a quad or a dual core cpu a same game the results are pretty much the same in lower resolutions.. 1200/ 1024 or lower. in higher resolutions there starts to be more of a difference..

ATM there are no games available that could use upto 4 threads with the QC. Thus a 3.5GHz DC would definately be faster for gaming.
Google for any Intel quad (http://www.google.com/search?q=intel+core+2+quad+review) reviews and see it for yourself.

eh what about subreme commander :slap: and i'm sure that game studios are gonna add quad core optimization to older games too.. well to the most popular ones :D

It isn't that simple. You don't just release a patch and suddenly the game is now supporting quad cores and more. The game engine has to be built specifically for 4 cores in order for it to work.
An optimization? no. And quad core will not be coming to older games very simply. Why waste time and money when it can be invested in new products?

1 quad core r jsut much harder to oc ... i dont expect many Q6600 do more than say ... 3.2GHz on air
2. even if u somehow manage to get Q6600 @ 3.6GHz on air orthos 8 + hrs stable ... u still need games taht support it ... atm supreme commander does a crappy job of supporting it ... they assign core 1 : rendering , core 2 : ai , core 3 , 4 : house keeping working according to one of their engineer .... so
jumping from single core to dual core was a big boost .. but from dual to quad is not going to be as fast as it was ... if games dont uspport it .. or even make good use of all 4 cores .. only something like
core1: 100%
core2: 30%
core3: 20%
core4 : 20%
a total of 170% or 1.7 core used ... how efficient is that?? thats horrible
tahts supreme commander (according to many people with QX6700 posted there .. flame them dont flame me if thats wrong)
... u jsut wont see ANY performance difference in any game out there other than supcom ... i mean if u want to score high on 3dmark by all means buy it ... but for gaming ... software is just not there
newer games like alan wake , crysis , quake wars should support it ... but the performance difference between quad and dual at the same speed? i'd say 10% maybe ... also u can oc dual core higher , and might be able to even it out who knows.. (ie Duo @ 3.6Ghz vs Quad @ 3.2GHz)
that being said i think a good time to buy it is Q3 .. i mean $266 is just too cheap ... and Yorksfield or Wolfdale will be out Q4 or Q1 08 i think ... by taht time there should be more games support quad core
In 3D06 i think youll need about 4.2ghz on 4mb core2duo to match cpu score of stock Q6600.

yes thats right .... IN 3Dmark 06.. in games it's a different story.

Interesting, maybe that means that more games down the road will really benefit from it. I think it will be worth switching to after the price drop.

i dont think that would be a very good idea.
after the price drop means even crappier quality Q chips.
Look at the current E6600.
If you want a high overclocking Q, your best bet is to get a earily bin and pray its the B3 stepping.

I refuse to pay twice the price though for the same CPU.
I would wait and get a new one after price drop if they are stil good or buy a proven used one then.
