Hi,
I'm very interested in the new mid range cards, as I'm no high-end gamer.
The question is: Why is nobody talking about the GDDR3 based 8500GT cards that just came out? I mean the XFX 8500GT with GDDR3 for example costs 30% less than a 8600GT, even has a SLi connector and could really be good bang for the buck. When overclocked, these things should fly. And all that for 80,-EUR ATM, which converts to about 109,-USD.
When I remember the hype that the Xpertvision/Palit 7300GT Sonic created, this situtation now really puzzles me. :)
Greetings from Bavaria!

You should give it some more days as ATi seems ready for a good fight in the mainstream category this time.
The 8600GTS is really disappointing me :(

Palit have 8500GT DDR3 Sonic version 256MB
Coast is ~80 $
Stock clock : 600/1200MHz so this card will be good for low coast clocking :D
This card come to Poland soon ( 9 may ) so, when I received one or more ( eg . 8600GT Sonic ) I test it and upload some info about oc & stock performance.
btw : Palit have also Super version of 8600GT - this card come with 512MB of DDR3 memory.

OK, maybe I'll wait for the ATi offerings. But if they keep delaying their stuff, I'm out and will buy a 8600GT or 8500GT. This should get kinda interesting. If ATi/AMD again will have to sell their products by price only, in contrast to superior or equal performance, the budget segment could profit.

BTW, here are some pics of the card I was talking about:

I'm still thinking about buying two of these. I just don't know if I can wait for the ATi offerings. Hmm... :)

I've finished the measurements for a 8600GTS review, god these cards are so power...less.
Really weak :(

Let's also keep in mind, a 7600GT does around 3400 on 3dmark06 and approximately 6500-7000 on 3dmark05. That's ridiculously under-powered... atleast in my eyes....

Does the Point of View card really have "GDDR3"-RAM?

The P.O.V website specs are DDR2.
Rivatuner 2.01 reads this card as:
128-bit G86 (A2, 16sp) with 256MB DDR3.
From Riva's Graphics diagnostic report
NVIDIA specific display adapter information
----------------------------------------------------------------
Graphics core : G86 revision A2 (16sp)
Hardwired ID : 0421 (ROM strapped to 0421)
Memory bus : 128-bit
Memory type : DDR3 (RAM configuration 00)
Memory amount : 262144KB
Core clock domain 0 : 459.000MHz
Core clock domain 1 : 918.000MHz (Shader Clock)
Memory clock : 399.600MHz (799.200MHz effective)
Reference clock : 27.000MHz
As far as I can make out the labeling on the RAM ICs is:
Qimonde 0650
HYB 18T256161BF
FVV51042

It is GDDR2 (according to the Qimonda website) my friend, so your results are more or less uniteresting for me, as I knew GDDR2 based 8500GTs would suck. ;)

No worries. I didn't get a chance to check the IC specs.
Believe me they suck!. Then again depends what you are going to use them for.
8500gt's are a cheap HDCP capable card for your HTPC.
Cheers.

Maybe you should wait for ATi's new DX10 mid range cards..............I think I heard they'll be out by the end of the millenium. :)

In the meantime I decided to not get a 8500GT, but a 7950GX2 (2 to be exact), because the price here was so tempting (60,-EUR lower than for a 8800GTS 320MB, and nearly always the same or better performance). This will do until DX10 will really get important.
