Just switching to Vista on my laptop I notice the absense of the "Up another level" arrow that Ive grown acustomed to in XP. Is there any way to get that back?

Ive got my Back and forward buttons but this is just driving me nuts. Sometimes clicking back just takes me to a different subfolder that I was viewing, instead of taking me back to the root folder. If I had been browsing numerous subfolders then my only option seems to be the old fashioned way of navigating to the folder from My Computer and then opening folders in new windows. PITA, I just want my damn up arrow.

why don't you click on the section of the window?

eX has it right. You simply click on the higher level you want in the item box. Using his example you could click on Downloads (H:) and be at that directory or go higher to Computer.

I find it more useful than simply a go up button because it saves me sometimes having to use that a couple of times if I want to go all the way up.

yeah but that UP buttom was nice.
i think it was retarded to take it away, because if you dont click on the name right, in the right spot it changes to a typable location, or a drop down menu.

just annoying and more crap that they changed and shouldnt have.

In Vista, click on the View menu and select Go To. You will see an option for "Up One Level" and the shortcut key is ALT + Up Arrow.

So, anytime you want to navigate up a level in your directory tree, just hit ALT + Up Arrow.

Better yet, program a mouse button to do the ALT + Up Arrow for you and you will be off to the races.

It is too bad that they did not give you an icon in the Toolbar that would do the same thing for you.

You can still just use the Backspace key, right?

The backspace key works like the "Back" arrow and does not always go up one level of directory.

It just works its way back thru folders that you have viewed. So if you jump around from folder to folder, the backspace key will not move you up one level in the hierarchy.

Alt + Up Arrow always moves you up one level.

Hope this makes sense...

This is the reason why I refuse to use Vista. Why in **** did they not even let it be customizable??? A simple button, why make it impossible to add that button, there is plenty of room for it. Why not give the users the power to choose themselves when they paid for it? It's like they left that empty estate just to have a laugh at you now...IT's NOTHING THERE, EMTPY SPACE..HAHA!

We have had that button for how many years?

This is so utterly stupid that it really pisses me off.:shakes:

Doesn't everyone have a back button on their mouse for this kind of thing?

the back button on the mouse works just like the backspace key and does not go up one level
I agree, why remove it ? :(

[edit] only way i found to add the up button back is to install QTTabBar, customize it and add the new button

Not to be the obvious jerk here but this topic is nearly a year old.

Although I do agree with what you mean. I had to poke around to figure out how to go back a level.
