Just installed Ubuntu on one of my crunchers.
I have installed the BOINC manager (using the add/remove programs) , but when I start up the BOINC manager, and try to attach WCG , i get : "boinc mngr cannot connect to boinc client"
Probably something stupid i overlooked. No time at the moment to check this out myself hence my question.

Hello,
You need to install BONIC client through synpatic package manager from administration menu.(Add/remove only installs the manager not client.)
Search for "BONIC-CLIENT" once you enter the manager.

I was considering putting Fedora on my kentsfield.. Is it worth it on WCG like it was on Rosetta? Also, I didnt know there was a linux client out.

I can't comment from experience about any possible advantages with WCG, but I understand the latest Linux client at least gives parity to Windows.
Client downloads are here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

Does anyone find that Linux restricts the amount of memory BOINC uses?
in which way can we check if it does or not?

The first time I started BOINC a message came up that said something to the affect that Linux stops applications from using more then 500mb of ram..

the newest client on the BOINC site says this in the version info:
"Added memory usage limits for BOINC applications. (Check preferences for new settings)"
maybe it has limited itself?

Just an FYI. A new version of Ubuntu (7.04) will be released tomorrow. It will include a new Windows migration tool that will recognize all your old bookmarks, favorites and IM contacts.

It's got it's own quirks but recognized my ATI cards right off the bat.
Running F@H until next week using SMP client on 2 boxes. Works well enough :D

I have Suse 10.2 (64 Bit) ready to use too
...I think I'm gonna try a different distro on each box ;)

Yes - Good chance since it may be set up for a specific chip/set/vidcard/sound/network adapter.

Yes, it helps quite a lot, especially if you compile yourself on 64bit linux. I run benches and posted them in benchmark thread.
However, I am not really sure by how much your daily output would increase because of that too optimized/fast client thingy (or call whatever you want:)). My rigs are not running linux 24/7, so I cant comment.

Very hard getting on the Ubuntu site tonight. I think a lot of people are trying to access the site to get 7.04. It's after midnight in my area. But the new version is still not in the download section. Maybe I'll try again in a few days.

If you are using 6.10 now, you can upgrade directly to 7.04 using the upgrade manager (under System section). Otherwise, you can do a clean install by downloading the iso version and burning it to a DVD. Using upgrade manager is rather slow today, probably because a lot of people are trying to download the upgrade files at the same time.
