yep. i'd like to migrate to linux myself - ant atm ubuntu would be my choice. combined with beryl it's just awesome.
but i'm an enthusiastic gamer and linux' lack of "gameability" holds me back :/

The only thing you can do in Windows but can't do in Linux is play current games 100% of the time but fortunately they are working on that...

What about drivers for peripherals?
Many drivers are there, but it depends on manufacturer
For example, there are no drivers for X-fi at all, another turn off for gamers

Same thing here, If only I could play games on Linux.

Might not be quite the same as linux, but XSOS 3 with DX10 support I would imagine would do fine for gaming ;)

screw games, dual boot poses no problems for me, what i want is two things in order to install linux on my main computer: good ati drivers, and a x-fi driver. hopefully amd is busy working on the first one.

I read a while back that creative were planning on writing linux X-Fi drivers and they were supposed to be released sometime early this year, but we're already almost half way through so I don't know. And ATI' drivers should begin to improve more soon, they've been getting slightly better lately.

What about drivers for peripherals?
Thus far only a few Exotic parts have given me any problems but fortunately the Linux environment is so dynamic it fixes problems pretty quick after they are found [this is my personal view and may vary]

There are many games for linux, just not all of the latest titles. (a little known secret is that there are MORE games for linux, than their are for Windows)

I appreciate the support but as with the official notice of V4, we are moving away from Windows [But we will continue to support and update V3 until a point and time where it is no longer needed] I actively encourage people to try new Operating systems, even if they are completely different from what you expect. [Syllable for example]

ATi has been slow to their Linux development but fortunately AMD is excessively helping in that department. This is unconfirmed but word is that a completely open source driver for R600 based on CTM is in the works.

ATi/AMD's Linux drivers have been continuously improving. First more stable and now for more and more performance.

V3 and V4 are being developed concurrently.

AMD has said that they don't care about making GNU/Linux drivers at all. And Microsoft is doing everything they can to make DirectX un-implementable on WINE.
I don't game, and run Debian Linux with my Nvidia card.

This is a very noobish question but during my Solaris 10 testing one of the biggest annoyances I found was the lack of text rendering on LCD screens that MS Cleartype allows in Windows. Is there the same problem in other *nix OSes?

you guys could use Cedega (http://www.transgaming.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=2&meid=-1) to play games.

What is the performance hit, though? I'm sure it wouldn't matter much with older games that the hardware can easily support but newer games like Supreme Commander and stuff that push hardware to the limits in its native Windows environment must run very poorly in a shell.

Gentoo is the only way :D Ubuntu is for noobs [/flameoff] :D
And TBFH, Cedega doesn't work with many games a.t.m.

I use debian. The things I need to compile I go get them myself.

the transgaming works is that you vote for the game you want support for and they get to work. What games have you tried to get to work?

I'm currently dual booting windows and feisty Ubuntu. I've been in that beta for over a month and I really like the experiences that I've gotten from it. I use linux for everything except games right now, which is nice, because nix is very fast, and my windows install is streamlined since it only has a few games installed on it.

X-fi not doing anything to improve sound on their $20 headsets, yet another unfortunate turn of events for gamers.

I can see that free-only mentality and acknowledge that is important to some but I'll take the proprietary drivers and codecs with my version thanks.
