The time is fast approaching for the Halo 3 Multiplayer Beta. According to a post on Bungie.net, the multiplayer beta will go live on May 16 and will end on June 6.

Bungie's "Rule of Three” marketing blitz has already determined who will be able to enjoy the Halo 3 Multiplayer Beta. In December, Bungie opened up beta registration for those wanting to participate. Bungie offered a second chance to gamers who played at least three hours of Halo 2 multiplayer and then registered at the official Halo 3 website. Finally, those who purchased specially marked copies of Crackdown will also be able to join in on the fun.

Bungie's Frank O'Conner notes that as this is still beta software, some things might not quite be production ready. “Now, I will say this again and again -- the game you’re going to play one month from now is Beta software -- and while it will look somewhat close to the final game, it IS Beta -- and will contain quirks, a couple of rough edges and all that jazz. But we’re pretty confident you’ll find it a dynamic and exciting taste of what’s to come in the Fall," said O'Connor.

O'Conner also goes on to describe some of the features of the Halo 3 Multiplayer Beta. "The Beta itself consists of three maps -- Valhalla, High Ground and Snowbound... There are a number of new features you’ll get to test out -- including a new grenade type, a completely different class of weapon and some of the enhanced online functionality we plan to bring to the game... In May, when you’re firing the Spiker, sniping vehicles with the Spartan Laser and sticking fools with the Brute Spike grenade, remember that it’s just a peek-a-boo fraction of what’s to come."

Microsoft Game Studios and Bungie Studios announced last month that Halo 3 will come in three versions when it is released later this year. The Standard Edition ($59.99) will feature just the game. The Limited Edition ($69.99) will come on a metal collector’s case and will feature a bonus disc and art book. The Legendary Edition ($129.99) will come with a Spartan Helmet, two bonus discs and storyboard art.

I wonder if the people who made Crackdown feel bad that almost all their copies are sold because of another franchise.

I got in with the Rule of Three. I earned it :p: .

crackdown sold over 1million copies in the first 2 months wich is Enourmous.

Im pretty sure microsoft is eating alot of the profits made because of halo3 but its still pretty nice.

Kinda sad to sell copies of Crackdown they had to throw in a free Halo 3 Beta. Gears of War sold all it's copies for itself.

Sales on Crackdown should not count towards any records or anything.
