I think the warning is obsolete should be upgraded to 512K where appropriate, some threads have loads of hi-res pics that even chokes my 2Mbps.

It's there to warn people that there are a lot of images. Sometimes it can be bothersome for people WITH large connections, or if someone is on a rig at that very moment in time with low ram, etc. Oh and, there are some places that don't get broadband (like way out in the boonies).
Or, maybe they just don't feel like forking over $50+ a month to big broadband companies when Dial-Up is "enough." There are plenty of reasons.
EDIT: Isn't it kind of funny, the thread title is the exact thing you hate.

Please don't be naive.
XS is a global forum, and in many parts of the world a 56k warning is very valid, for those with dial up or even for those with broadband speeds less than 1MB.

oh no i clicked a thread with tons of pictures im dooooooommmmed!
first of all, who cares. but anyways... even if people had 56k, theres always a back button or stop button if they dont want to wait. i ran with 56k for a long long time, and i really dont see why it was necessary in the first place... but really now, it just lets me know theres pictures, and i like looking at pictures.

Joinging XS doesn't mean you have a $3000.

I know many people that are still stuck with 56K because of there location, and they are paying as much as I am for SDSL. CRAZY, ISN'T IT?

That is true. It is not a issue of being able to afford something in most cases; it is a case of isolation where, in many parts of the world, they simply have not built out broadband capability - especially for people living in the countryside and such - even in some small cities in europe, they don't have broadband at all, although more and more is beginning to be built out now, which is good.
