I was just playing around with my laptop trying to get rid of a few services to make it run a little smoother.. Anyway, I came across a pretty good tweaking guide for Vista at TweakHound (http://www.tweakhound.com/vista/tweakguide/index.htm).. He has a whole table of the services and explains them in detail so you know what you can disable and what you shouldnt disable... So if your running Vista and WCG this guide may help you optimize your OS to crunch a little better:)

Edit: I also had a little problem trying to view windows media player in firefox... I was trying to get the plugin to install but it just wasnt finding it.. So I found this guide (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Windows_Media_Player#Missing_plugin) and it works just fine now.

eric what version of vista did the lappy come with?

i just purchased a copy of vista home premium 32bit for my media center and i've seen people complaining about the number of services on startup, but mine didn't have any more than XP does... between 29 and 32.

I have Vista Ultimate 32bit, not many background applications, WCG, msn and I.E running, have 64 processes running, sometimes goes up to 72:eek:

BTW, thanks for that guide NJ, about to look into it, hopefully pull a few more points through:p:

correct me if I am wrong but you guys are saying you bought vista and installed it on a system you built!? NJ got his pre built and with all the crap from windowz as well as the crap from the laptop manufacturer.

So you should not have as much running as the ones that get a preinstalled setup.

It came with Home Premium.. All store bought computers come with a ton of bloatware... I uninstalled several things and killed a bunch of uneeded services and it still seems to be running alot.. I am about 32 running services now and it does seem to be running pretty well.

I have about 57-60 processes on vista ultimate. While that seems to be a lot yet strangely enough I still get 3350/6879 on cpu benchmark. I dont plan to disable everything since this is my main rig, but I'll see what I can squeeze out of this.

I think I may disable a few services now:D

Be careful which services to disable.

I agree many services are started at bootup that are probably not important. But when I look at the task manager I also notice that many of these don't really consume that much ram and are just dormant and do not steal any cpu hours. So i am not sure that decativating them would make a difference.

That said, there are a few that do, such as windows file index service for example. it does use a bit of cpu time and accesses the HD so it does slow crunching. But the rest basically just sit there idle.
