I don't believe this is a vista issue as this was a common issue with the first X-Fi's, in XP. Try setting a fan on it to provide a nice breeze and see if that helps. They can overheat.. though it's hard.

As for the windows update ones, not sure to be honest. Try removing them through Device Manager.

Woah a new bios on the X-Fi or your motherboard?

I have a Fatality X-Fi. I haven't had any problems yet, but if there's a new bios, I'd rather take action now as a precautionary measure.

could be an IRQ sharing problem.

HPET, more likely.

What means HPET?

High Precision Event Timer. Allows scheduling of pci devices traffic. The "popping" and "static" are results of improper traffic flow across the pci bus, and X-FI picking up stuff that was not destined for the device. It seems the dicarded info results in the "noise", and HPET can manage traffic so no "uncalled" data hits the card.

I think it can be caused by IRQ sharing, because i had this problem when I put my x-fi in my server where was sharing the IRQ with scsi raid controller and the NIC. The cracking/stuttering was particularly intense when there was activity on the hard disk. And the pci-x133 slot dont share traffic with the pci-32 AFAIK.
