I'm guessing I didn't put enough grease in the socket so my question is where to apply the grease? I had been filling the center square hole of the middle of the socket and then placing the chip in, clamping it down and filling the surrounds with grease.do you guys put grease IN the socket itself (over the pins) or will that prevent good contact?

uh.... does this really deserve an answer? GREASE DOES NOT GO IN THE SOCKET.
You are supposed to put great on top of the IHS, just a tiny little drop. Grease can be conductive, and spark gap+motherboard=dumb mistake+fried motherboard.
If you are using Phase-change, which i see you are not, Dielectric grease goes behind the motherboard to prevent condensation over the socket, but nothing goes in the socket itself, BUT THE CHIP. Too much thermal grease acts as a thermal insulator. Bad. Bad. Bad. duh.

Bend over :slapass: I have a TEC so my temps are below ambient and I do have condensation to deal with.
Here is the tech article from Swiftech install guide. See the socket with the grease IN it? :stick:

Since my last motherboard shorted cause water got under the socket, my question was can I put grease into the whole socket and cover all the pins? Well , update: the answer is yes cause I have done it thanks to a suggestion from others. Worked fine.
