View Full Version : Writing an article to a magazine, and guess what: 90K stock cards

I write now a monthly article in a portuguese computer magazine called BIT, in a overclock section supported by Aquapc

The articles are aimed at enthusiastic / overclockers users and the 1st one a was about overclocking basics

For the second one my ideia is talking about my favorite game : 3Dmark, of course :D

So I ask for 2 EVGA 8800GTX 768MB KO ACS3 for some SLI benching technics explanations to the portuguese readers.

Of course I can't mod these cards wasnt expecting to much on overclocking the KO ACS3's since they are already factory overclocked to 626-1000.

For my suprise they do easily 675-1060 - that's quite nice for a stock air cooled video card.

Here is a photo (well think that I am better overclocker than photographer;) ):

http://pedrorocha.planetaclix.pt/2_8800GTX_AC3_SLI.jpg

As you can see I put the test cards on my EVGA 680i (old revision) that is my Mini-Cascade that Ricky did for me with old Vapo compressors (-88º idlle, -70º full load)

Some tweaking (my favorite part of the game), raise the booth PCI'es to 140Mhz and here is the result :

http://pedrorocha.planetaclix.pt/90374_4900_8800AC3_Stock.jpg

90K on stock graphic cards, I'm sure the readers will enjoy.

BTW: Here is the Compare URL » http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=9177878

As Shamino (one of the nicest guys I ever met) told to a guy that ask us in Cebit: "Don't you play games"? .. The answer was : "Oh yeh, we play the best game ever: 3DMark 2001" - nice answer Sham, fully agree with you :toast:

Also run 3DMark 2005 - also a good game but unfortunately there are some players that seems to use some kind doping (coff.. coff ..;)) that can betrayal the sporting spirit involved on this bench :( ..anyway here are the result:

Very nice scores you got there pedro but seriously no credit goes to the cards(it is all yours) you are already faster that other guys with lower clocks , with a few mods and CPU under powerful(Ricky 3 stager :)) cascade , i am sure that 98+K possible with cards on air

Well, congratz Pedro ;)

These "stock" coolers aren't just simple stock coolers :p:

Just one thing:

Did you run all tests at the same PCI-E frequency? Example, Nature likes higher PCI-E than some other. ;)

Thank you all :toast:

That is measured with a high precision Fluke thermometer, but - as you can see in this photo - the temperatures measured by the EVGA 680i bios are very similar if I use near 1-75-1.8v

http://pedrorocha.planetaclix.pt/TempIgualFluke.jpg

Is a bit better tthan DI, but MUCH MORE PRATICAL I can bench for hours ..just turn the 2 switch on (1st the 1st stage / then the 2nd stages) wait the temp to drop to -80ç..

In fact is very similar to a Vapo or a Prometeia, its very small and do not make much noise.

It uses old Vapo and Prometeia compresors that I have , also the VapoLS mouting kit - with that it is very pratical to change the CPU or mobos in just a matter of 2 or 3 minutes.

Let's say it is civilized small cascade for everyday use..

For more hard core benching there is my partner in bench Ricky cascade - the new 3 stager is big, brutal and belive me 3 big rotarys really produce a lot of noise ..but also a lot of cooling power, and the quad cores really produce a lot of heat.

Well maybe we do 3Dmark 06 with my QX6700 next time, altought Ricky considers 05 and 06 "ladies benchs", 3DMark 2001 for him is the only "mens bench" ..eheh:D

You remeber my friend :D Sham is really a nice guy the anti-star in fact ..so modest and always smilling

Oh yeh for us is really much better to see the FPS count grow than frag in CS

:) I know Pedro... was Shamino and mine was'nt an offensive words... but i think that u are a veteran of 3d01 and the tweaks are really importants... and this thread tell us the true about you and your optimization... :)
Shamino is one of the best benchman in the world...
Therefore congrats for this score man!

Great Pedro....congratulations for the score and mostly for your thought ...you're showing everyone what's your philosophy and approach to overclock....

my favourite sentences:

Ricky change the compressor of the 2nd stage of my Mini-cascade - more details here http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=143972

So I get this small improvement of the score - 8800GTX still fully stock cooler and no mods at all :)

Any chance he'll test these subzero?

I don't think so, these are my vid cards for 24/7 and I pay a lot of money for it, since the 1st place it is not possible with the cpu on the mini-cascade do not make sense to mod it and to risk to kill it.

I do these benchs only for pure fun and to keep my 3Dmark addicted more or less pleased:D

I see that your pcie frequenci is at 140 mhz!? Any problems with harddrive/soundcard or such. I am at 120pcie mhz 24/7 and it helps a lot for the video oc but do ya think i could dare to up it to 140 without any problems?

If ya tried 100mhz pci what was the higest oc theese cards then, did 140 help ya much?

140Mhz PCie is only for benching, not to 24/7

For 24/7 125 PCie maximum.

Do not touch at PCI :nono:
