need help don't know whats wrong

The other day I went to play a video from this site http://www6.falloutboyrock.com/falloutboy/disco.php and the screen just went black and said no signal and the comp stalled so i had to shut it down buy holding the power switch for a couple of seconds, then turned it back on but it was still black screen and only worked when i turned of the monitor then turned it back on then turn the comp on. I just went to that site just then and everything worked good. Also last night when i went to play a video file with zoom player the same thing happened the screen went black and said no signal every time so i rebooted and same thing happened when i tried to play any video file with a media player i tried with mplayer, vlc and media player10. Then I thought i would see if stalker worked and it didn't same thing happened black screen no signal.

But after this problem happens when i restart then go to settings to make sure everything is right everything starts working again, but then out of no where the problem happens again it only happens when i try play videos of games.

so I'm guessing its either the video card, psu or i doubt it but maybe my monitor.I say it might be my psu cos a while back it made a bang noise and smoke came out of it but everything kept working and i have been too lazy to get new one. but then again it could be video card since all these problems have got somthing to do with it.

my system is

amd64 X2 4400+
leadtek 7800gtx 256mb 500/1.3ghz
Asus A8N-SLI Premium
Corsair TwinX1024-3200XL Pro
ViewSonic VX922 19" LCD 2ms
Thermaltake Purepower Butterfly 480w PSU
water cooling swiftech storm and mcw 55 vga block

I say it might be my psu cos a while back it made a bang noise and smoke came out of it but everything kept working and i have been too lazy to get new one.

:eek: Dude that is your first mistake there. If EVER your PSU or ANYTHING in your PC goes bang and smokes any then REPLACE IT. Especially the PSU, because running it afterwards can then take out other parts as well!! Replace that ASAP. Don't keep running off of it!!

That aside, hoping that the rest of your system isn't getting cooked as we speak due to crazy rail fluctuations, excessive ripple, spikes, etc., upgrade your video drivers, it sounds like it is going out of range for the monitor or something. When it goes black, does your numlock or capslock still work or not?

Again, REPLACE THAT PSU, NOW. With a real PSU too, not a thermaltake (except for the toughpower line). Antec NeoHE, Corsair, Seasonic, Enhance, Silverstone, FSP are all good units.

thanks$200 CPU...check, $300 vid card...check, $150 Mobo, check...$100 ram...check...$200 lcd...check, watercooling items, easily $200+...check.

Running all that with a $50 psu: Priceless...

hopefully everything is in check. get a new quality psu first. if it fixes the issue, then you're done. worser case scenario, motherboard may be damaged

k thanks for help how are these psu SilverStone 750W ST75ZF or Enermax INFINITI 720W if my video cards wrecked these would be able to handle a 8800gtx right ?

k my insurance company is basically giving me new comp because it was a power surge which wrecked the psu i get a new cpu, motherboard, ram, vga, and psu. I need help with new parts because i havn't kept up for ages about whats good now.

cpu: i was thinking Intel E6700 Core 2 Duo 2.67GHZ or is it worth getting quadcore ?

Motherboard: realy don't have much of a clue the brands i have a choice from are Asus, Gigabyte and MSI i want one which has good features and is a good for gaming, ocing

ram: also don't know much besides i want ddr2 crosair brand which has good performance and should i get 2 or 4 gig, 4 gig overkill ?

VGA: 8800gtx the only thing i am wondering is that it realy dosn't matter what brand u buy cos there all made from nvidia right ? the only 2 brands from this shop that come oc'd are a brand called Inno 3d and point of view are they any good ?

psu: i was thinking the Enermax INFINITI 720W or SilverStone 750W ST75ZF since this shop dosn't have the psu of the month itll also run my 2 sata hdds which are a 320g and 200g and 3 case fans and my pump and 2 fans on my radiator plus the things mentioned above

also is a swiftech storm cpu block good enough for a e6700 and does swiftech have a new vga block which is compatible with the 8800gtx
