/\/\/\/\/\ What he said. I have to turn it off off. I snooze it and play a game and in the middle of the game it will kick back on for the he11 of it and crash my game to desktop.

Sounds like a pain, you can't keep BOINC running while gaming, like with F@H?

you can put it in different modes but it still will kick on so for the safety of not worrying about it just kill it and then re-fire after your gaming session. It will crunch and play solitaire just fine though

IFAIK, there is no problem. Boinc is acting normally.
To suspend Boinc activity for a short time: Using Snooze from the icon menu, Boinc suspends activity for one hour only, then restarts automatically. You can see this when you look at the message tab. (SNOOZE == to take a nap for a short period of time, like the snooze button on your alarm clock!).
To request that Boinc suspends it's activity till further notice: Using Boinc manager advanced interface, select Suspend from the Activity menu. All Boinc activity will stop indefinitely. Currently loaded WUs will remain in memory but no CPU time will be used. When user shutdown/reboot/restart windows, Boinc client will reload, but activity will stay suspended. So use this option with caution. Hint: after suspending Boinc activity, minimize the Boinc manager to the task bar rather than close it. This way, the Boinc (ver 5.8.x) icon will remind you that it is suspended so you don't forget.
Usually Boinc would back off whenever the CPU is in use by a higher priority application. I don't have CPU intensive games on my PC, so I don't know first hand the extent by which Boinc affects game performance. So unless the user knows that Boinc is interfering with the game or creating other problems with it, just leave it alone or suspend Boinc activity (see above). That said, there will be instances where it is better to stop the Boinc service (example hardware tuning, OS maintenance etc).
To shut down Boinc service completely: control panel -> administrative tools -> services (hint: make a desktop shortcut for services menu item). Select the Boinc service, right click, select Stop. This stops the service normally. Boinc stops the WUs, cleans after itself and exits gracefully. To restart the service, do the same again but select Start. Note: when Boinc service is restarted, it will crunch the WU from the last saved checkpoint, so a few minutes of work may be lost. Hence the preference for activity suspend rather than shut down.
Using the MS service dialogue is the normal way to end a service (Boinc or otherwise). It is equivalent to the File -> Exit menu command we issue in any application (do we end MS word from the task manager?). Do not use the task manager to "End" Boinc (or any other) process. It is not the same thing. This is a command (equivalent to the Unix KILL) issued to the OS not to the application. Windows will instantly and brutally kill/terminate/destroy/wipe the application from ram, and all unsaved work will be lost (the dialogue even warns of that!), and open files may be left in an indeterminate state. Result: may lose WUs, and even worse possibly corrupt the client_state.xml file as well, thus requiring a Boinc reinstall.
Only resort to killing an application via the task manager if the application is "not responding" after some time or the desktop becomes locked. This should be considered an action of last resort. After killing the application, and saving work and exiting other open applications, it is best to restart windows to clean up the mess.
If you are as lazy as me, and rather not make five clicks whenever you want to start/stop Boinc service, then use a batch file to automate the process. Attached is a zip file containing boincstart.bat and boincstop.bat and their respective desktop icons (please excuse my lack of artistic talent). Just extract the four files in Boinc directory and create desktop shortcuts in the usual manner. Whenever I need to stop the Boinc service, I just double click the red one, and when I need to restart it I just double click the green one. Mission accomplished.
