Hi all,
After reading for months your forum I decide to take my chance in the high end overclocking systems.
My config :
Tower: Antec Nine Hundred
Asus Striker Extreme bios 1004
c2d 6600@ 3.6-1.54v
2xAsus 8800 GTX (not tuned yet, waiting for vista SLI driver :( )
Geil 8000 5-3-3-6@550 2.4v
2x250 SataII in Raid 1 (stripping)
Actually I watercool the CPU and both GPUs on the same ring but I will install a second ring dedicated to the mother board. I will so add two mofset and chipset watercoolers from Mips on my Striker. (I'm getting crasy to find some place in my tower to place the second WC ring. :D )
I have planned to replace the ram from Geil by some Teamgroup TXDD2048M800HC3DC with 2x1GB@1000Mhz and Cas Latency : 3-3-3-8@2.2-2.35v.
Do you think it's a correct choise ? I read that Micron D9 roxx.
My second and main question concerns the 6600 overclock.
Actually I use this setting:
AI Tuning: Manual
Nvidia GPU Ex: Disabled
LinkBoost: Enabled (the only way I found to keep my 3150mhz bus between mcp and spp)
FSB - Memory Clock Mode: Unlinked
FSB (QDR), Mhz: 1600 (means 400FSB)
MEM (DDR), Mhz: 1100 (means 550mhz speeds)
Vcore Voltage: 1.5375
Memory Voltage: 2.275v
1.2v HT Voltage: 1.3v
NB Core Voltage: 1.4v
SB Core Voltage: 1.55v
CPU VTT Voltage: 1.4v
DDRII Controller Ref Voltage: AUTO
DDRII Channel A Ref Voltage: AUTO
DDRII Channel B Ref Voltage: AUTO
tCL (CAS Latency): 5
tRCD: 3
tRP: 3
tRAS: 6
Command Per Clock (CMD): 2 clock (2T)
Advance Memory Settings
tRRD: 3
tRC: 6
tWR: 3
tWTR: 8
tREF: AUTO <- I don't find any information about this
Async Latency: AUTO <- I don't find any information about this
CPU Spread Spectrum: Disabled
PCIE Spread Spectrum: Disabled
MCP PCIE Spread Spectrum: Disabled
SATA Spread Spectrum: Disabled
LDT Spread Spectrum: Disabled
CPU Internal Thermal Control: Disabled
Limit CPUID MaxVal: Disabled
Enhanced C1 (C1E): Disabled
Execute Disable Bit: Disabled
Virtualization Technology: Disabled
Enhanced Intel Speedstep Tech: Disabled
LDT Frequency: 5x
PCIEX16_1 Frequency (Mhz): 100
PCIEX16_2 Frequency (Mhz): 100
PCIEX16_3 Frequency (Mhz): 100
SPP<->MCP Ref Clock, Mhz: 200
Running like this the CPU is 35° idle et 46° full loaded (2xCPU stress runned for a night)
I think i can go higher but to obtain a 3.7Ghz I need to up the vcore nearly 1.7v...:slapass: the cpu goes to 55° on full load...
Do I need to change something else in my bios ? I cannot find something logik in this extra power needed to only 0.1 Ghz enhancement :(
Thank you for your replies and thank you again to reveal me the OC world

what multiplier do you use for your 6600 ?
1.7v sounds a little bit too much for conroe imo, mine only needs 1.45v for 3.8ghz

Hello :)
Currently I set 9*400 to obtain 3.6Ghz
Do you think I can go upper if I pull down my multiplier ?
I was thinking the higher FSB you have the more difficult it was to get it stable. :p:

these chips/boards are different so putting your multi to 8 might give you a few more mhz. i can't get over that you use 1.7v to get that 3.6, sound pretty dangerous, ur absolutely sure you need that much, would be pity if you would fry it :(
:off: i think that phelan was refering to ME rather that you about that hello thing ;) , you see we have this thing among us long time XS addicts that we usually wellcome new member to XS and i faild to do so ( i did not realised that it was your first) :slapass: :slapass:
so wellcome bro hope that you enjoy your stay here at XS :YIPPIE:

Well maybe I was not clear enought :p sorry for my poor english ^^
Actually i'm 24/7 at 3.6ghz with 400*9 with 1.5375v in vcore
If i want to be stable at 3.7ghz the vcore has to jump from 1.5375v to nearly 1.7v
This is this difference that i cannot understand. Did my cpu reach its limits ?

i don't know are you aware of this but boards that have 680i sli chipsets have reported to have holes in the FSB. so you might want to try to make a bigger jump when raising you FSB, mayby put your to multi 8. try 50mhz or even 100mhz jumps when you raise it, if this will not work your chip has reached it's limit, and extra voltage wont have much difference. then again it just might work. mine boots to windows at 4ghz but sadly runs REALLY hot and is no were near of being stable.
thanks DON for the :slap: rub it in wont you, mayby a additional :slapass: :D

Thank you for your support ! :)
I've done some tests yesterday night and I cannot even launch Windows if I set 8x450 to reach my current stable 3.6Ghz, whatever the Vcore I select.
I've tested with:
Vcore Voltage: from 1.5375 to 1.6
Memory Voltage: 2.275v
1.2v HT Voltage: 1.3v
NB Core Voltage: 1.4v
SB Core Voltage: 1.55v
CPU VTT Voltage: 1.4v
Should I up something else ?
I will try to jump directly after the "fsb hole" today after work. I'll tell you then.
What could be the hole range ? could it be > to 50 mhz ? 100 ?
Can I have several hole ?
What is your advise to proceed this kind of tests ? I've never read something about it. Should I maximize my vcore from the beginning or I have to do it like normal ? I imagine that add 50mhz on the bus will anyway need more power.
I precise that for all my cpu OC test I always reduce the latency and the speed of my memory to exclude any kind of memory issue.
edit: I see that if I up the SB or the NB with 0.5v the system do not works properly. Can it be a temperature issue with my chipset ? My tower is from 33° to 35° inside after many hours of use.
edit2: I read again the post from EVA2000 about striker+c2d6000 and I notice the bios seems more stable in 402 release ? I'm 1004 beta actually. What release of bios are you using actually on the Striker X ? do you think I have to downgrade it ?

I for got ask. what is the stepping is your e6600 ?
usually that will give some indication of the possible overcloking capabilities that your chip might have.
and i see that you all ready have figured out that different bios could help to solve the problem. my former DFI expert was like that, a right bios could give me nice oc (3.1ghz) but a other kind (newer) failed to get my fx-60 even to @2.8ghz. so try different bioses.
so the multi does not seem to help, have you tryed to jump to straight to 3.7ghz with multi 8 ?
if that does not work try it on multi 9.
set voltage to.. mayby something like 1.50-1.6v at first. if you can boot into windows and test that those settings are stable then you might want to try lowering the vcore to a level that enables you cpu to work properly. there is no need to overly stress your cpu with high volts if are able to run it with lower volts. would hate to see you kill your precious conroe ;)

I will now start to redo all my tests after downgrading the release of bios 1 by 1. Does anyone of you know a best one ? :D

So after 6 differents bios from the 302 to the last 1004 it seems i cannot go upper than 3.6Ghz with a "standart" Vcore. (1.55v)
The strange thing is that before my cpu do not need this 1.55Vcore and was working with all the same settings but 1.375v
Do you think I push something too much and I 've reduced the potential of my conroe ? I 've planned to WaterCool both chipsets and mofset on my motherboard but now I'm not really sure I will be usefull... :/

I've just finish to install my second ring of WC dedicated to the CPU. I will order the chipsets and mofsets waterblocks if it seems necessary.
I had to externalize the radiator for the GPU but I like the look it does.
I'll take some pics to show you :D
Now the GPU temp do not afect anymore the CPU one it seems my CPU stabilize easier with a lower Vcore.
will do somes tests and tells you.

About OCing I'm waiting for my new Ram before add chipset and mofset waterblocks. Geil 8000 suck on my board and i will try a micron D9 so.
Any preference between:
- G.Skill Kit Dual 2x1GB F2-8000PHU2-2GBHZ
- Teamgroup Kit Dual 2x1GB TXDD2048M800HC3DC
- Cellshock Kit Dual 2x1GB PC 8000 C4 Micron - CS2221440
I think I prefere the Teamgroup because it's officially cas 3 for 500fsb but I want somes expert advises

how is that Alphacool NexXxoS XP performing, what temps are you getting with that?

Like I explain before I cannot push my CPU very high (seems to need too much Vcore for frequency > 3.6Ghz) :slapass:
Now I'm 3.5Ghz (9x385@1.44v), the room temp is nearly 24°
Idle : 28°-29°
Full : 36°-37° (2 x CpuBurn for 1hour.)
This is my first watercooled PC so I let you decide if it's good or not :p:
edit: I finally got something with my memory: Geil Value 8000 - 550/5-3-3-3@2.275v

Incomming this week :
- 2 MCH003 from Mips for NB and SB
- 2 MCH133 from Mips for Mofset
- 1 Apogee GTX to compare with my NexXXos XP
- 1 QX6700
- 2 GSkill 8000 Cas 4 micron D9 GKX
If this CPU is as good as I expect I will lap it and rebench both waterblocks.
Update and mounting pics this weekend ;)
ANP !!!
