View Full Version : Is a Single MCR120 radiator good enough to overclock quad core?

I can get a swiftech MCR120 and Apogee GT, and MCP350 today here in town. Would this be good enough for a qx6700 running at 3.7GHz 1.5V?
There would be only this in the loop.
Thanks!

Highly doubtful. With 1.5Vcore on an E4300 and single 120 rad I get temps around 70C, a quad will definately put you over 80C.

If you can get them for a good deal I'd get all that stuff anyways.

Put 200cfm fan here and you are good to go :)

nonsense, i am doin it right now, and the temps are fine up to about 50% or more load, then i have to turn the clocks down. Depends what your using it for.

Huh?? You say it's fine and then state that after 50% load it's not? That doesn't sound fine to me. That's like saying, "My car runs great until I put it in gear."

At 1.5v that quad core is gonna be hot. I would suggest a 2x120mm rad at least.

You gotta be kidding. Talk about that radiator being grossly inadequate.

PLainly put, NO. You would need atleast a PA120.2 and a decent pump

I don't think i've ever heard the phrase "at least" in that context with PA. An MCR-220 / BIP 220 would be a better idea, however at stock the MCR-120 would work.

Ok, the consensus seems to be at least a dual rad.
So, what about an MRC220, DTec Fuzion and a MC655 pump?

LOL, then it seems to NOT BE GOOD ENOUGH then:stick:

That would be pretty good if you couldnt fit a PA in there, it's only money, right? :p:

Like I said, it depends on what your using it for. I am executing WCG 24/7 while gamin. This almost never hits 50% cpu usage. To use 100% across all four cores is hard to do unless you're trying to, i.e. stress tests.
For my uses, right now, this is good enough

Let's look at Swiftech's own data, shall we?

If you keep a flowrate of 1GPM, and any pump & block combination worth considering is capable of that, if you stick a relatively noisy Delta 1212HE fan on the MCR120, it can dissipate around 200W of heat with a 10C coolant to air differential. That means if your ambient is 20C, your coolant will be at 30C, and at a rough guess, your CPU will be at least double that, 60-70C.

Is this bad? It's certainly not ideal - a single MCR120 can handle the 200W of heat, but you'll have higher temps and more noise. With a 3x120mm radiator, you can get away with lower (or similar) temps with less fans = less noise.

So your using a 120.1 rad to cool a QX6700 @ 3.9g?
