no i dont want x-fi sli - i just want to record audio in on one card & not have to listen to it as its recording - & then use the other soundcard for my own entertainment... so can i plug in 2 soundcards into the 1 pc system & use them simutaneously? i have a x-fi xtremeaudio, though i'm willing to buy something completely diff providing i can do the aforementioned... anyone know? thanks again..

Yes, you can use two sound cards ( and even more ) as long as no resources sharing/conflicts occur.

But you don't have to use two sound cards to do what you described.
I assume that you want to record a signal ( sound source ) from the Line In or Mic In input, and listen to some music or games, etc at the same time.
All you have to do is, set your recording source to the desired input, mute the playback volume of that input, and you're done.

this is going to sound dumb: how do i do that? if i go to the sound control / volume panel thingy in windows & reduce the volume, it reduces the incoming volume so to speak - thus nothing gets recorded...

Here's a screenshot showing the mixers ( playback & recording ) set up for recording from Line In, and playing back something else ( our choice ).

I just heard about this program the other day:
http://www.driverheaven.net/audio-general-technical-discussion/132412-velbac-sends-audio-creative-soundcard-another-soundcard.html

It allows you to route the creative sound card audio source out through your second sound card, so you can use different outputs with the higher 3.0+ EAX processing.

i use my motherboard sound card dedicated to ventrillo on headset, and my xfi to my games on 5.1 speakers.... you can hear people on the headset no matter how loud the speakers and it dosnt sound like people screaming at you,, and no audio loops on my end
