Like the title says I'm afraid my eVGA 8800GTS 640 is being held back by my rig. I'm using:
Biostar TForce 550
AMD X2 Brisbane 3600+ 2.38 Ghz
Corsair XMS2 6400C4 2GB @ 950 Mhz 4-4-4-10
eVGA 8800GTS 640mb @ 640/2080
OCZ700GXSSLI
Hitachi Deskstar 160GB SATA-II
My 3DMark06 scores:
SM2.0 Score: 3744
RtP: 30.68 fps/FF: 31.72 fps
HDR/SM3.0 Score:
HDR1: 42.74 fps/HDR2: 39.48 fps

are you happy the way the card plays your favourite games.........that is all that matters man
if you aren't you could jump on the Intel bandwagon and get a decent conroe with 3.4/3.5GHz capable OC 24/7 and that will certainly give you a large boost to scores and FPS but ONLY if you need to

when did this become about need? Lol, j/k.
Yeah, I figured that was the case, just needed someone to confirm my thoughts. Thanks.
PS...I'm considering a conroe build...I've just never built an Intel rig since the PII days. I don't know anything about 'em.

funny; my p2 was the last intel i had aswell :);
then 1gig athlon; then 3500+ winchester...now this.
um do you have a base 3d06 score? like at stock futuremark res etc? i am interested to see what you get with that brisbane...?

conroe will give you about 8800 at stock gts speed.
you could oc the gcard to maybe 600/900 (or whatever) -oops you have already clocked the crap out of your gts...well yes the cpu is limiting you.
c2d's are very easy to oc (unlike amd...that i never found had much oc room)
...but; it really is hard to say to you: buy a c2d over only 1000 3d marks..?
why not keep what you have until the next intel/amd release of quad cores....that brisbane cant be very old.....or if your a good salesperson i suppose you could hoc your current rig for a c2d...(doesnt appeal to me)
anyway; new c2d's are not far away either.
edit: yeah well you would be at over 10,000 3d06 with c2d probably; but like dinos22 said; it all depends on what you want to play. a more powerful cpu will crunch through calc.s for games with many units much better than a less powerful cpu....it's hard to say because i've never had an amd dual core....i would have thought they (amdx2/c2d dual) were not too much different in actual gameplay; bf2142 i bet you would notice no difference for example.

thanks for your thoughts adamsleath. I'll sinff around the new c2d's when they hit.
I still have work to do on this CPU...I can get it to 3ghz, I'm pretty sure.

You'll get a bit better scores from C2D, but nothing that will show up that much in real games. Check this out, scores w/8800GTS 640MB from P4 3.4GHz, E6300 stock, E6300 @ 3.22GHz, X2 3800+ AM2 stock, X2 3800+ AM2 @ 2.7GHz:

If you ignore the CPU score, because naturally the X2s will get smoked by C2D, the individual test scores are within 1fps of each other for stock E6300, oc'd E6300, and oc'd X2.
Keep pushing your Brisbane, if you can get it to 3GHz that should be good enough.
