Hi all

I just bought a new laptop (Aspire 5633) and it came with vista home-premium pre-installed.

I installed it as english language, and now ive spent a bit of time tweaking it im quite happy with it (just aas good as XP IMO)

BUT!!

I have one major issue.

Im currently living in Russia and learning the language.

But VISTA will not display any cirillic charachters...
Even a word file writen on a russian PC wont display, i just get "????????"

The vista support site says "The first thing Vista users will notice is that, out of the box, all languages and scripts are enabled. "

but for me they are not, ive looked in as many option menus as I can find and im stumped.. any ideas?

For example.
I load wordpad and type something in russian and save it (using russian keyboard)
Then I try to look at what i just saved and its all ???????????
Very very annoyed, please help. I hope ive just done something dumb.

Have you tried any of the fonts listed here:
http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/vista/Vista_LCG_Scripts.mspx

Please post if this was of any help.

Visa ships with the fonts in the first link as standard.
When I copy the vista fonts onto an XP machine they display cyrillic correctly. so I think the font files themselves are ok.

The fonts in the second link are for minority languages.
I just need plain ordinarry Cyrillic for Russian.

Thanks allot for your help.

I think I might try installing in Russian then try and change the langiuage back to english to get cyrillic to display propperly.. im 99% sure this will work. I just hope that I can get everything I need to read easily back into english again.

Something from this website?
http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/utilities_editors.htm

Are you able to see the Russian word "spasibo" in the attached file?
It was saved in OpenOffice 2.1 via:
Save As-Text Encoded-(Change filter settings)-Unicode

I am on XP Professional and I was not able to save and view the same file no matter what, neither in Notepad, nor in WordPad! It always came back as "?????" and I had selected "Unicode" or "UTF-8" while saving. It was always saved as 7-8 bytes only.

Ive got it working now.

For most things anyway. Reinstalled as russian language then changed everything back to english.
Sometiems I get a program insaller or something that comes up in russian not english, but its good translation practice :)

Ive still no idea why i have this problem in the first place.. unicode should make this problem impossible.
Maybe acer did something to the OS in english mode as its a russian version of vista...
