View Full Version : High temps w/ TEC troubleshooting

This is one of the first runs of my new PC.I'm running a 320W TEC on the ever-popular 320W, 12V Meanwell PSU. Right now, Core Temp is reporting 50C on each core, and it's at idle and stock voltages! There are two main possible causes that I see for this problem:

1. Mounting: There are some capacitors that my neoprene insulation is compressing itself onto that could potentially cause a very poor mount. If I decide that this is the problem, I will order a copper "shimmy" to distance the block from the CPU.

2. TEC-related: My Meanwell's fan isn't spinning. (Granted that I have tampered with the fan a little and might have disconnected one of the wires that leads to it.) Is it possible that my TEC isn't on? Would temps be sustainable if it wasn't? I would think that the answer to this question depends on the thermal conductivity of TECs.

Please help! I will be glad to provide any information about my PC that is deemed necessary to answer my question.

I believe the Meanwell's fan only spins if it deems necessary... its thermally controlled.

Yup, its thermally controlled. Its a 60mm noise pain in the butt. I hear it go on and off in my case. You could put an 80mm exhaust fan over the port and perhaps that would kill the 60mm...or at least stop it from going on all the time.

As for the problem with the temps, Yes, it does sound like your TEC isn't even on. If thats what it is at idle, what is it at load? Also, whats happening with your TEC is that its is insulating the actual cpu.
Some would think that because the TEC is not turned on that the TEC waterblock turns into just a regular Waterblock. But that isn't the case because the way a TEC block is made is...

copper block for water
TEC
Copper

Its sounding like your AUX psu isn't even on thus not powering your TEC.

there should be a green light on the Meanwell. I believe I have the same version as you.

If your using the Swiftech Relay check the connectors on the molex as I had a similar trouble with the newest relay that I purchased. The pins on the molex connector for the 12v sensor came loose from the factory and I was scratching my head for a bit before I found the problem.

I am in fact using the Swiftech relay, or a version of it that I bought off of Sidewinder, to insure compy safety. I thought that it could be the source of the problem, but didn't want to bring it up until I was sure that the TEC wasn't turning on. (I am sure now, because I looked at the green light on my Meanwell and it's a no go.)
