New system: e6600 (ideally ~ 3.6GHz w/ Tuniq) + Bad Axe 2 + 8800GTX

I plan to upgrade to quad core + 8800 SLI when prices come down and nvidia chipsets mature, but would prefer not to have to upgrade the ps again.

Note that this will be a rather "Spartan" gaming system (only 1 raptor, 1 optical, not much else except quite a few 120mm fans).

Current plan is to squeeze everything into a Antec 900, but I'm tempted to buy the Silverstone TJ09 :D

I do plan to push the system, including overclocking the gpu(s).

I want modular cables. So, I'm leaning Decathalon, but I'm also thinking the Corsair might be adequate and the Seasonic M12 700w also seems solid.

Will I likely need more power in the long run. Something like a Zeus 850?

Thanks!!

Thanks. I'll go with the DA750. Should be future-proof enough for me.

EMan, go OP750, its a much better psu, and its $150 at EastLuna.

PerkamAFAIK, it is the exact same PSU without the modular connections.

Do you have contrary info?

Do you have contrary info?No i just think its safer to go with non-modular connectors on high end PCs - its a principle to go by.

Why does it make a difference if it's modular or not?

Why does it make a difference if it's modular or not?Modular cabling introduces an extra possible point of failure, some people hate modular wiring.

It was my understanding that the modular problem was overstated -- the connectors could fail, but this is unlikely -- thus, modular psus are not inherently problematic, though they add some (minimal) risk for problems.

But this is hearsay. Can anyone offer any evidence one way or another for this issue?

And some people couldnt live without it. :) Honestly the whole point of failure is blown to proportion. Unless you are constantly yanking on it daily, there is no way it would start deteriating and catch on fire all of a sudden. I mean wouldnt the 24pin, 8pin, and 4 pin molex all would burn by now after how many times we've used it like that? If it's truly hazardous then I wouldnt recommend it to anyone but there hasnt been one case that shown this to be true.

Tell you what if Zippy comes out with a modular PSU, i'll take my words back :)

On average, when you compare modular vs non modular PSUs from the same company, the non-modular ones are the better ones, and when you've seen countless such examples for so many years now (modstream vs powerstream a prime example, with the new mushkin PSU line up offering even more evidence for this) you tend to develop an intuition for these things. It's the reason you will never see Shamino, Coolaler, Pedro, OPP, Fugger and the rest of the great ocers ever using modular PSUs.

That does make sense. Similarly, Nascar drivers don't have air conditioning because it would pull off the engine. But, they also drive normal cars to and from the racetrack, no? Anyway, I love to push my system (on air), but I also enjoy easy cable management and improved airflow. Of course, if I someday experiment with LN2, then everything (on the benching rig) would be maximized/minimized for the sole benefit of raw speed!

G/l with the one you choose :)

HX and M12 are much quieter than Olympia or other similar psu's using 80mm fans (except Antec Neo HE which are almost as quite as the M12 and HX). If the high noise is no problem for you then the Olympia is ok. My vote goes for the Corsair Hx 620w, quiet, efficient, modular and plenty of clean power :)

I think the new OP750/DA750 both use a single 120mm fan.

It's been reported the Corsair 620w can handle 8800 GTX SLI. I do want to keep the same psu when I upgrade to quad-core + SLI. Any opinions here?

For 8800GTX SLI:

Zippy 850W

PC P&C 750W

Silverstone OP 750W

Silverstone DA 750W
In that order, all are single +12V rail with up to +12V@60A. :toast:

Zippy 800W

You mean 850W? The only 800W PS2 from them I can think of is a quad 12v SSI model. The next model down in the Gaming line is the 720W IIRC.

Now if they just had a few good places to buy them! :slapass: for Zippy's marketing!

The Silverstone DA 750W does have a 120mm fan on it and I can't hear it.
Word of caution at least currently is that there seems to be an issue with a few OP and DA750's with a buzz/whining noise in 3D apps. Silverstone is trying to figure out whats up but no solid word on it yet.

I do have a DA750 and I love the modular cables (first PSU with it). As well plan on in the future to make my own custom cables with proper lengths to match my case/needs which in the end will help improve case airflow. Thats what I see to the benifit of a modular setup. As well though I do have one of the buzzing/whinning PSUs as well and have to RMA it.
