kinda cool, that is completly amazing.
finnaly the idea of the internet being unlimited information is becoming realized.
Imagine anyone can educate themselves as long as they have a PC.

You could always educate yourself with a PC and the internet. You could have even done it with a library card (before the invention of PC's *gasp*).

I'll likely be educating myself with this.
The idea is to learn a course before taking it(that way I can sleep in class and easily pass)

this'll be most awesome for their computer curriculum. they've got some of the best, and historically computer curriculum has never been cheap to get your hands on... now it'll be free.

Self-education with a PC is, however, much easier and more efficient than spending hours upon hours in the library and/or checking out a ton of books.
This is good news, in any case. This will hopefully become a good trend for universities to latch on to, and maybe even dissolve that veil of exclusivity that most of the higher-tier universities perpetrate. ;)

So you could get an MIT style education from the library?
How am i supposed to know what to study?
This is amazing... even experts in thier field can look through this and go through the curriculum to broaden thier knowledge.

well this is good to have as a reference, it is next to impossible to learn a subject well let alone master it from a book

Which URL are you downloading from?
or rather, which URL did you type into the program?

lol I put the site index in there....
http://ocw.mit.edu/index.html
Now i'm noticing some other site's folders in my download directory:
en.wikipedia.org
rmrpbs.gsa.gov
statse.webtrendslive.com
www.bnl.gov
but those only add up to about 70MB so it's not bothering me, ocw.mit.edu is about 800MB
I'm seeing the software loading lots of PDF files, it's at calculus section right now, I'll let it load during day time while I'm at school.

yeah thats the same site i threw in, and its nabbing all kinds of weird index files, i figure i'll just let it go all day today and tomorrow.
Did anyone look @ how the Zip files are named? WIll they be usable or are they cryptic

Yeah, I also pointed it at that url. Just in case in didn't work right, I pointed Downthemall in Firefox towards the pages with pdf's, zip's, etc. in the civil engineering sections (the ones I'm interested in).
Each page I point that at works fine. All the files workout great.

This has actually been around for a good while now. Maybe they are expanding it now, but when I was taking computer graphics and stuff last year I went and looked at their computer graphics classes and and same for power systems this semester. Since I am an EE and MIT has pretty much every single course an EE could ever find usefull its nice to have as a reference.
However it can not even come close to what you get taking the class at a university, esp. one like MIT. Its one thing to have the class notes and presentations, yet another to actually be able to listen to it explained by a knowledgable professor.

just think how much each poor kid is paying so that we can get it all for free. . .
but that's seriously cool, i love seeing what one of the best colleges in the world has to offer and try to think how badly i would fail every one of those classes.

unfortunately the things one would also like to have free, are the books that go with the class, however I doubt that'll happen any time soon

I go to MIT, and even as a student here I still use OCW occasionally to study for tests (most MIT students do). It's been around for awhile, it's just that they are now promising to put all 1,800 course curriculums on it, which is sweet. This is definitely an exciting move in a good direction. I like my school :D
