While J.T. Wang, Acer's chairman and chief executive, recently said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that the company hopes to make an acquisition this year, industry sources indicated that the company is actually targeting US-based Gateway for the merger.
Acer is looking at some candidates which the company wants to pick up, Wang said in the interview, however, he declined to name possible targets.
The sources indicated that although Acer enjoyed growth in 2006, it still did not meet its own expectations. If the company want to increase its US revenue proportion to more than 25%, it is necessary for the company to experience further consolidation, the sources noted. Taiwan PC players also commented that if Acer purchased Gateway, the company will increase its global share to 8%-9%, narrowing its gap with third-ranked vendor Lenovo.
Last March, Wang denied rumors saying that the company was interested in acquiring Gateway. Wang said Acer will see significant growth in the US market without any acquisition in 2006. The rumors at that time even indicated that the two companies were in talks about pricing and the method to merge.
Gateway's current market value is about US$288 million. The company is the third largest PC supplier in US market, said the sources.
Acer expects to be the number three players for at least one or two quarters in 2007 and the company aims to beat Lenovo and become the third largest player next year, the company projected recently.
