I had done some benchs to understand the cpu limitation in 3DM06, i'have tested some C2D frequency with 8800 GTX Stock (575/900):

600Mhz Fsb 100 ram 200Mhz
1200Mhz Fsb 200 ram 400Mhz
1800Mhz Fsb 300 ram 500Mhz
2400Mhz Fsb 400 ram 600Mhz
3000Mhz Fsb 333 ram 555Mhz
3600Mhz Fsb 400 ram 600Mhz
Timings were 5/5/5/15 for all.

After that i've redone those tests with Oced GTX 650/1050

The curves :

The screenshots with Stock GTX :

97% of gain between 600Mhz and 1200Mhz (100%) :slobber:
71% of gain between 1200Mhz and 2400Mhz (100%) :woot:
37% of gain between 1800 Mhzand 3600Mhz (100%)

40% of gain between 1200 Mhz and 1800Mhz (50%)
23% of gain betweeen 1800Mhz and 2400Mhz (33%)
7.1% of gain betweeen 2400Mhz and 3000Mhz (25%) :(
4.1% of gain betweeen 3000Mhz and 3600Mhz (20%) :slapass:

Conclusion : useless to overclock an 8800GTX under 2400Mhz with C2D or under 2400Mhz you need to overclock the cpu.

Hope it will enlight some of you :)

Correct if I'm wrong(I don't post too often so it's likely) but wouldn't you have to set various test points for gpu speed as well as cpu speed to prove this, especially since it's a synthetic benchmark?

In case you didnt notice moving from 2.4GHZ to 3.6 made a very slight improvement in SM2 and SM3

nice test, thanks for sharing

your graph is interesting to me because i agree that i seem to get diminishing gains for higher cpu clocks wrt graphics and c2d....so i want a more powerful cpu that scales higher :woot: :brick: :bsod:

2nd: the only thing that is being showed is that the 3D Mark 2006 score benefits from high end cpu's :)

PS, you didn't mention test method (exact clocks etc.), how many runs you've done, something to keep in mind in the future :)

Yeah, id realy like to know how a A64 like the 3700 would preform with a 8800gtx or even sli. because i own a lcd screen with a native reso of 2560x1600. Many people say that at that reso the cpu doesnt matter anymore, but i'm currently stuck on a sempy 2400mhz, my graphics card is a 7800gtx and i'm looking to upgrade to 8800 series or ati R600. But if the cpu is still the bottleneck than it's useless. Not everyone own's a c2d or even a c2q ? most of us are still stuck on a64 .

no single core but still very useful

This test show's a lot's of diffirent game's. They all have diffirent impacts on the preformance. HL2 lost coast shows a diffirence of 10 fps atih a diffirent processor but farcry with a 3800+ has exactly the same fps as with a fx62. So would it be better to keep my 7800gtx and buy a c2d for hl2 but if i want to play farcry i'm better of keeping my sempron and buying a 8800gtx. Hmm now i'm confused.

you guys fail to see that cpu score is an integral part of the total for 3dmarks 2006... if your CPU gets better by 200 points your overall score will be by 200 points.. like said above.. your sm2 and sm3 do not get much better with processor overclock.

Not correct, look sticky in 3d section - CPU score is not integral, it's a formula . You don't think Hipro's 7700 cpu score 5g quad paired with x1050 would get 8k 3dmarks in 2006 would you?;)

Does the sm2 and sm3 score get better with the overclock?
