View Full Version : Best OS for P2 folding

Wondering what the best OS option would be for attempting to get an old P2 with onboard graphics and sound to fold and put out something that is, at least, worth the while(would obviously be doing timeless wus). How much does the OS option play into folding power? Will a change from windows 98, which it is currently running, to some version of linux or something make it perform better on the fold?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

From what I have read, the windows client is a bit faster than the linux client, though you can get around that because the linux client works with wine. If you are sticking with Windows, I would go to at least 2k just for stability and uptime. For Linux I'd try for a distro aimed at low system resources, maybe Xubuntu or something of that nature.

I don't think you'll get better stability and or uptime from a Windows OS versus a Linux OS first all. secondanly with a self-compiled Linux client you will get better, faster results in Linux than in Windows depending on the Linux's library and compiler version. My advice would be to setup Gentoo Linux or any other Linux Distro that gives you the ability to only install a minimal system build one without all the bloat like xinetd, java,X,Gnome,KDE etc.. you should just setup a base-system with only the toolchain and some general system services for remote access i.e ssh, ftp. Then you'll be able allright.

At no point did I state that any Windows OS would be more stable than any Linux OS... He said the system is running win98, are you going to argue that 2k isn't a more stable OS than 98?

And sure, you could bust out a super custom linux build, but honestly, for a p2... the performance gain over just running the windows client in wine is probably negligible with that low of system specs.

For my own knowledge, can you post the link to a good article doing a comparison between windows on wine, the binary linux client, and a self compiled one?

common sense will tell you that no WINE application that simulates a windows program will be faster than one compiled in linux optimized to the system's hardware. period.
my bad about your comment on windows2k stability and uptime, i thought you meant that towards Linux. I agree window2k is more stable and has a better uptime rate than win98.

When i'm finished with new rig's overclocking I will do a comparison with Linux vs WINE/BOINC client to confirm.

I agree 100% about the common sense tells you bit, but I have seen a quite a few people on other boards who claim to have tested fah on wine and the native linux binary who are claiming higher ppd on the wine deal. I haven't personally done said test.

Well it depends on what project you are folding and how much effort you want to put into it. That will take some research on your part (or post the project you want to fold here). For something like WCG, although Linux would probably be faster in completing WU's, the claimed credit is lower than Windows (by a decent amount). On something like D2OL or F@H, I would assume that a customized Linux install would be faster / quicker.
