Wow that's one hell of a chip. Hope they all come out like that at retail!

Thanks for the results!

Those are pretty awsome results. I wonder how a retail conroe will do though. Hopefully they'll hit around 3.6 with good air cooling.

Nice! Thank you for the information.

Looks like my second rig is going to be an E6420 or E6320 and a P5B Deluxe.

Delicious.. Kentsfield or e6420 will be the question. Bet with the right steppings we'll see even higher clocks than current B e6400's.

yeah it does look pretty decent, but you have to keep in mind this is the same b2 stepping as used in the existing c2d's (non l2), so it should be not too different. Definitely a good breath of air to see 4mb make its way down to lower end cpu's

Very very nice Victor. I OC mine (http://fanboyreview.blogspot.com/2007/02/brag-intel-core-2-duo-e6320.html) a little, but never really spent enough quality time with it :).

Thanks for sharing...

Conroe ES overclocking is an illusion and a scam by Intel.
ES cores are cherry picked thus making any comparison to retail units completely pointless.

edit:
I wonder what is the purpose of ES'ing every single CPU speed bin? There's no technical reason that's for sure.

Maybe it's just for hype? Intel only needs to toss around the samples to certain people and wait. Next thing they know is there's people all over the net practically promoting these insanely OC'ing CPUs and doing free advertising of a sort. Too bad these results are not the reality. But luckily there's always atleast two factions that are happy.

Oh and btw, nice OC.
Too bad it's only an ES.

Since you'r asking I can assume you know, and then you might also know why do they exist, and what they'r used for, which is not what we're seeing with the dubious amounts of C2D ESs floating around on hardware forums.

yeah, i kinda agrtee with u on that one. most of the ES r cherry picked by intle to provide the best OC result for reviewers to post on forum and get enthusiasts to buy it

i doubt the retail one will oc that high, benchable 4GHz, prime stable 3.8GHz

i'd say it will do at least 3.2GHz, and prolly 3.6Ghz primestable, but anything above that really depends on luck

i am not saying retails wont reach that high, but it will be very very rare

Yea and mobo manufacturers are supposed to test their boards with no cpus. Its obvious to most of us that some people that post here have access to a number of cpus so they can pick the best of a bunch but es cpus are not cherry picked. There are a couple guys on this forum that have retail 6400s that prime at 3.8ghz but im sure you have some sort of conspiracy laden theory on why that is. Stop with the threadcrapping.

I've definately been waiting for this cpu, hopefully it'll do 8x525 with phase.

yeah out of how many E6400 retail can do 3.8GHz? on air , and prime stable

Wow... take off your tinfoil hat for a second and listen up. ES chips are one thing and one thing only.... Pre-production CPUs. That's it... that's all they are. They aren't "cherry picked" nor are the even binned all that well. ES chips are what the design teams and validation use to test the platform, as well as the chips themselves. Early silicon (ES CPUs) often contain bugs and have certain features enabled or disabled. All ES means is that the silicon is pre-production. That's it. It doesn't mean it'll overclock better, and in fact most of the time they don't. It's 100% hit and miss. For every ES chip that overclocks like a champ there are probably 5 that don't do that well.

This is coming from a person who deals with ES CPUs daily so trust me when I say that Intel DOES NOT cherry pick their CPUs and give them the ES brand.

^^ correct. ES's are completely hit and miss in regards to max frequency. The majority of reviews such as this don't come from units loaned to OEM's or enthusiast sites for review anyhow. They usually leave the Intel facility via someone's pocket, unfortunately. :nono:
