Are there are negatives to upgrading to Vista. In particular should I expect an incompatibilities with OCing software monitors , etc...
I have licenses for both XP Pro and Vista Business. My gf currently have vista and she says its much slower than XP pro.

Vista has been just as stable as XP.
Still running a 3.8ghz 24/7 overclock. I actually installed Vista with that overclock.
And Vista is very fast, or @ least as fast as XP!

Yup, Vista is sweet with OCs...in fact, its even more capable of handling unstable settings than XP Pro (was dual booting Ultimate and XP Pro).
Most the OCing software works - I'm just having some trouble with Everest (normal/lite) and SiSoftware Sandra - all cos of the great Intel Badaxe2
If your gf's machine is slow - try 3 things: New CPU (dual core), More RAM (more than 1gb recommended - 2gb runs like butter, and I imagine 1.5gb would be alright too - the more the merrier), and/or new, faster HDD - Vista does integrate the RAM with the pagefile quite well, and having a faster HDD helps this all the more. Though, I'm sure you know this. Also, what video card does she have? If its integrated, then yep, it will be lagging up a bit - mainly in Windows Flip and the like...
Running 3.0Ghz Core2Duo (E6300)
2Gb of DDR800 @ 860 Micron D9 Crucial Ballistix
320Gb Perpendicular Seagate Barracude 320Gb SATA2 HDD (with Vista partition)

Yup!
I'm LOVING Vista atm. I've had it for 4 days, Vista Ultimate 32-Bit. Works great.

I think for most of us here, Vista should run great. It sure does for me. Then again it'd be a major eff up on M$'s part if it had trouble with high clocked Conroes and 2 gigs of ram.

Yea it has been running smooth here too. Also the latest AtiT lets you overclock your video card as well, so that's another plus. There is still a slight performance gap between XP and Vista, but that gap has gotten a lot better with the latest drivers. And by gap I mean a few hundred points in benchmarks, nothing dramatic in gaming wise.

I was testing my rams using Vista premium on my 24/7 partition and Im pretty impressed at how resilient it was...... A couple of times I thought for sure I hosed my drives ( raptors in raid0 ) but it just seems to fix itself.... Ill still use XP to bench cos Vista feels "heavy".....

I just installed Vista Ultimate today, and it killed my OC for some reason. I had it running stable at 3.2ghz on XP Pro 24/7, then as I started installing Vista, once it finished installing files and had to reboot for the first time, it reset to default bios settings. So then I just continued installing Vista running at 2.13ghz. After it finished and I installed all my drivers and stuff, I went back to the Bios and tried to get back to 3.2ghz, but it'll BSOD while trying to start up Vista. So now I'm back to default clocks and its working good. Anyone got any ideas why Vista won't keep stable on the OC?

over clocking seems the same to far to me.

vista is the most screwed up OS ever. I have a clean 64bit copy of ultimate installed and everytime i shutdown, it corrupts the harddrive and i have to run chkdsk at the very beginning of startup again. i installed the raid drivers, i'm sure its not any software conflicts, just go to hell microsoft!
and sometimes it will just shutoff by itself and bluescreen
i'm sure its not overclock stability, i've tested with orthos.

^^ lol... you have driver problems or unstable overclock... To be honest Vista should have no more problems than XP with overclocks since if your CPU is stable it is stable theres no such thing as slightly more stable or slightly more unstable....

probably crappy logitech and creative drivers then. but still, F you microsoft.

Loving vista, but i think it will not be any good until we see some driver improvments, and sp1 updates for vista.

Graphics overclocking dosent seem to be very possible though.
I cant get any significant performance gains using atitool (only thing i can find to OC nvidia card)
The OC seems to set but peformance dosent go up much at all.
So for CPU it seems ok, but GPU its not much good at all (unless you bios flash your card)

I'm using the 920 beta of Everest in X64 Vista and it's working very well. Finally gives me some useful stuff to have in the sidebar, hehe.
I haven't spent much time gpu oc'ing yet, but I'd believe it might be a bit immature yet. I would guess that's connected with the removal of coolbits from the drivers for the time being. When the gpu drivers mature, things should be back to normal. Agreed?

Its definatley the drivers.
As vista moves most of the gaming and 3d calculations out of the OS kernal the driver makeup has changed allot, so none of the old programs work.
Im sure that soon somebody will work out how to get GPU overclocking working propperly. I wonder if Nvidia will put coolbits back? I suppose they will have to do something as enthusists will switch to ATI if they cant OC on Nvidia.
At least the new graphics drivers for Nvidia seem to be giving ok performance at last.
