View Full Version : Why do I need Steam to play single player games?

I know all about this from Half-Life 2, but forgot how stupid it really was.
So I got Dark Messiah of Might & Magic with my 8800GTS. I installed the game, seemed pretty cool. I found there were some major updates to the game, and that you had to have Steam to get the latest patch. Ok, so I went through the process of setting that up. Well it had to download about 1gb of data before I could play the game again. Now I assume it patched it, but it didn't even say what it was doing, and there is no way to check the version of this game.
Now every time I want to play, I have to start Steam first. I didn't before, and to my knowledge there is no way around it. So much for trying to run a lean system. :stick:
I can live with it I guess, but I just had to rant. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

the verbosity of the steam engine is horrible... and dont expect to be able to play any games if you dont have a net connection and havent opened steam for a week.

I think thats what everyone is thinking.
I don't know if the OEM versions of Dark Messiah of Might & Magic that are included free with products require Steam for single player. But with the retail version if you do custom install and only select to install only single player version and NOT the multiplayer version, Steam is not required. It only installs it if you install the multiplayer with single player. Also patches 1.2 & 1.1 are available at Ubisoft and most gaming websites.
On a side note I'm glad you got it for free, I paid retail price when it first was released and felt somewhat cheated. While a good game, not worth the initial $40 tag price. have fun!!

Good thing I got tired of CS after playing since beta 6.4 and now barely play Source anymore.

1. You don't need internet to start a game
2. You don't need to start steam to play a game. Just open steam and create a desktop icon.
3. If you come up with a lame statement such as "steam sucks," then you probably don't know much of anything about the program.

No read the post again. To get the latest update (1.03) you need Steam. If and when it will be available on the net, who knows, but it wasn't at the time.

Ahh, I see. When I played through it only patch 1.2 was out.

steam is a fine application, theres no other program to match it or even come close to matching it. people trash it because they dont own a legit copy of the game and steam pwns them.

Hm, true. Come to think of, there's no other program that act's like it. As annoying as Steam is to me, it really does organize everything including patches.

you can do it two ways. disconnect internet, or edited a file in the steam folder to force offline mode but i forget which file. its one line of code very simple though, search on google you'll find it
