lo

I'm having a problem with ocing my new P4 3.0C on an Asus P4C800.

First here's my specs:

P4 3.0C FPO : L308B887
P4C800D with 1007.005 bios
2x 512MB PC3500 Corsair XMS
Enermax 550/Antec truepower 550 <-- Enermax let's me go higher.
BBA Radeon 9800pro
SB Audigy
Adaptec 29160
Atlas 10k4 73GB
B'cuda 5 60GB
Lite on DVD and CDRW
Alpha 8942 with Papst Fan
Antec performane Plus with 5 Low noise Papst fans

Ok here's the "problem", when i go over 230FSB my system is not stable no matter what i try.

I've decreased mem speed (266 320), increased my mem timings, upped the vcore, vagp and vddr but it doesn't do a thing.

One thing i've noticed is that when i disable Spread Spectrum in the bios i can boot into windows @ 240FSB but it isn't stable.

Off course i locked the AGP/PCI to 66/33 and added a Fan on the NB heatsink coz it was getting quite hot.

Are there more bios settings which i might have missed that can have such a serious impact on ocability ?

Or is it possible i just have a "bad" cpu ?

I'm at a loss here and i apreciate any help you guys can give on this.

Thanks in advance

Welcome to Xtreme:D

First thing that comes to mind would be temps. What are your temps after running at 230 under full load for about an hour? You'll probably need to consider going to water cooling or even to a Prometia to maintain the temps.

welcome to xtreme, try disabling the HT, what is your Vcore Vdimm? memory timings? try 2-7-3-3.

Sounds like CPU temp issues.

Glad to be here :D

Temps stay below 50 under full load tho i haven't tested it for an hour tho coz i didn't have to much time last night.

HT is disabled coz i knew that could give some probs and i hate ACPI ;)

I have the vmem @2.75 as per recomendation from Ram guy on the Corsair forums and i tried the slowest timmings i could set tho i have the mem @ 5:4 so i don't think that's the problem. But i'll try those settings tonight.

I tried up to 1.65V in the bios but it didn't have any impact on stability so i figured that wasn't the problem.

I'm thinking of getting a Corsair Hydro Cool but atm i'm all out of cash so that'll be 2 weeks orso when my paycheck comes in :p

Thx for the help so far :)

I/O Error welcome to the Xtreme forums !

Overclocking mine I noticed that HT and PAT and no affect on the stablility of OC.

I have the exactly the same set up you do, I found that it takes 1.7v to OC to 238fsb with 5:4. I have the mem timings at 2-5-2-2

I'm on water so your temps may not allow you to hit this OC with increased voltage.

Yep Jeff is right. WHen i 4.08 ghz stable i had HT off. And ive been testing around and now i know why i cant ge over 4 ghz stable with HT. So turn HT off and you'll get at least 100 mhz more.

Well i've tested with running Prime95 for 2 hours and it got up to 46C under load, this was @ 230FSB.

I don't think it's that high for air but still i'll get some watercooling when my cash comes in, what do you guys think about that Hydro cool from Corsair ??

Getting a prommy or vapo will be out of the question for now because i can't nor will spend that much cash for a cooling setup, atleast for now :p

I have the stock intel cooler on right now @ 3.2Ghz 65C running folding/super pi/3dmarks and no probs here :D

i have a 2.4c using the intel oem cooler (will be going under the prommy in a week) and default voltages at 3456mhz with HT enabled...

my temps report 61C, but im sure that msi is having problems with the temp readings...

but i think your 46C under load temps seem ok considering its using the stock cooler

I'm not using the stock cooler, i'm using a Alpha 8942 with Papst fan.

I tried to go to 1.7 vcore but prime95 froze my pc, i think this chip just doesn't want to go higher :(

Edit : twiztdskatr i think that 65C is a bit over the top, you can damage your cpu that way, and not to mention the thermal throttling that slows the chip down

am not familiar with your board but i suggest you get a better HSF a thermalright slk 900 or 800 if it would fit or a zalman 7000Cu. This might help and its a lot cheaper than watercooling :)

PS is that a beta bios if so try using an older bios it might help dunno else what to recommend you got good parts.

Yeh i got the good parts to try and overcome this kinda stuff tho i won't give up so easily tho.

I'll play with some bioses tomoz, rite now there's to much blood in my alchohol to even atempt to think about a bios flash :toast:
