The x64 edition is meant for both AMD and Intel x64 based CPU's. The 64-bit edition was developed solely for 64-bit Intel Itanium cpu's.

I use x64 and I love it. My only problem with it is that when looking at the properties of MP3 files it does not show artist, album, year, etc. Even if the MP3 has that info saved and you load it into a program and that program reads it fine, it does not show up under properties of that file. I have only encountered 2 things that did NOT work on x64 edition so far, A game called Galactic Civilizations 2: Dread Lords, and Stronghold: Legends. So it is possible that some games and programs might not work, but those are the only 2 things I have come across in almost 2 years of running it that have not worked.

I have run XP x64 (for x86-64 CPUs) in the past. It is a weird OS, for me.
I didn't notice any significant performance decrease (although C2Ds are slightly slower running in 64bit mode), and the only performance increase came from the storage subsystem, which I found to be mainly because of the origins of XP x64 than anything else.
In case you don't know, XP x64 is based off Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition (Standard, I believe). That is both a good thing and a bad one. The good thing is, it has the superior memory management capabilities, storage subsystem efficiency and general "sturdiness" of W2K3 Server. However, because of that (and because of the x64 instruction set), there is software that simply refuses to install or run, and there are severe driver shortages on some areas.
For instance, my scanner (Mustek), my HP P100 printer, and even my Logitech webcam simply cannot run on XP x64 (or even Vista, 32 or 64bit, for that matter...). Also, FIFA 2007, Premier Manager 07 and Test Drive Unlimited (the ones that come to my mind at the moment) either don't install or don't run in XP x64... I admit, other software is generally not that picky, but even then you can't use most OC or hardware management software, which relies on a full 32-bit infrastructure...
Before going to XP x64, please make sure everything you want to use there is compatible with the software. I have read that AMD CPUs are ever so slightly faster when running in 64bit mode, so you might even gain a little performance. However, I still haven't been able to find a strong reason to go 64-bit...
Cheers.
