I've been sick for the last couple of days and bored out of my mind, so I went and bought myself AOE3... since I have almost all of the other AOE, i figured this one would be kick ass.
I was horribly mistaken.... WTF did they do?? This game isn't what AOE used to be... where are all of the units? The buildings? Everything! Either there's a ####load to unlock? Or there's nothing to expect.... like in the other games there were like 15 nations/empires to choose from... all with diffrent units/upgrades and stuff...
In this one, every nation has almost the same units and it's boring!
This game basically reminds me of cossacks and that's not what I paid for...
Sorry if this is somewhat a rant, but i'm really looking for other people's opinions.

I still prefer AOE2 over AOE3. I hate the limits they put on how many towers and such you can build. Also walls are almost pointless since the enemy can just walk through the trees so what's the point?
I wasn't impressed with AOE3.

I have yet to find a game that rivals the gameplay of AOE2. I played AOE for 2 years and it never got boring.
Maybe red alert 2, but just because of its multiplayer.

Well I played AOE2 and all of it's expansion packs like rise of rome and whatnot. Then i played Starcraft and warcraft online because microsoft online support AOE2 just plain sucked.... sooo much lag with such large armies.

I don't know what to say, we must not have played the same age of empires 3.
aoe3 is one of the deepest, most varied RTS around, only company of heroes outdoes it as far as content goes.
the "useless walls" argument is rather pointless: we're talking about cannon wars here. walls are in the game as a simple commodity. the only common units are cannons, musketeers and skirmishes, because what do you want, in the renaissance, everyone had cannon, musketeers and skirmishers or wasn't part of the show.
and the Warchiefs expansion even adds another whole dimension to the game.

aoe3 was made for its looks and it has a completely different kind of gameplay. its much more simplified. but am afraid you are just being crumpy because you're sick. aoe3 has plenty of units and buildings and new features.
aoe2's expansion is called Age of Conqueres btw. and the previous online gameplay Zone.com was very well done and it didnt not have any lag. its probably just your internet connection that sucks. but now microsft has gotten rid of support for aoe2 and it truely sucks.

I personally haven't played it, but a friend of mines is a huge AOE fan having played AOE2 for years, and he himself is always talking about how bad AOE3 was and how people don't even play for fun anymore, but just to take screenshots.

I really like AO3, though it's annoying how decent games last 2 hours.. I also hate the bugs as mentioned in the first responding post. Tower limits, nearly impossible to build walls near trees. I think the recent patch was kind of dumb, as the things that needed attention were not addressed.

Compared to Age of Kings with its expansion pack, AEO3 is a dissapointment. Still, I think it's pretty good game. It is far from sucking. Check out Stronghold Legends for a game that truly sucks if you want a comparison.

I think it sucks very very hard, the setting is kinda dull, and the whole thing with the building decks and home city's etc bwehhhhhhhhhhh!

EXACTLY what I thought... I had been looking forward to AOE3 for ages but it was nothing new other than graphics, the tactics were horrible (you were basically being rushed by AI) and there were too less units/buildings.
Going to have an AOE2 lan-party soon again. Good ol' 10-hour AOE2 mp-games!! :toast:

I was/am a big fan of AoE2 and while AoE3 certainly had much more eye candy, as far as the gameplay goes I think it was a bit of a swing and a miss for Microsoft.

I think it sucked because they went with the rifles/cannons. Most AOE-fans favor medival theme.
I want a game like the classic Stronghold: Crusader but with more stuff to it.
Sparta: Ancient Wars is looking good btw. 3 civilazations though :(
Also, I really hate the Home City thing. I want everything to be in one big map.

aoe2 is better and thats a fact.
the gameplay of aoe2 and aoe3 are very different. gold is no longer the limiting factor (no more stone) and massing an army takes 30seconds in aoe3 compared to 5mins or longer in aoe2. fort is not all powerful like the castle. aoe3 has less stratgey to me its just about massing the right units.
